Tenancy Application + Freelance Contract

Does anybody have any experience applying for an apartment rental on a freelance contract? My husband has a salaried position at CERN, and I will be on an hourly contract, expecting to work 60-80%. This easily puts us within the '3x the rent' rule but our application for an apartment was denied on financial grounds. Does anybody know if freelance contracts are subject to stricter assessment? Thanks!

It shouldn't be a problem.

I managed to get a mortgage as a freelancer - and my wife wasn't working at the time.

Freelance contracts are seen as insecure meaning that they think you'll be more likely to move away at some point. Is it really freelance? Often people will work through a payroll company. They still get paid per hour but you become an employee. You can use the payroll company's job offer as proof of a permanent position. (That's what I did). It depends if the payroll company itself considers your position secure enough. Swiss can be very conservative. Depending on your husband's salary it might look better if you're just a stay-at-home housewife. Each landlord can choose who they like. It's a hot market.
