It would have been good but also a good thing too that the tickets were limited.
The SBB used to do this in October/November with cheap day tickets for the whole Swiss transport network but with no limits on the number of tickets sold. Travelling then was a horror. It also created huge problems for the various transport companies with innumerable people waiting for the last cable-car/bus/ship from difficult to access locations, mountain villages etc. who had to be "rescued" with unscheduled services.
Of course, the other side is Ryanair and their like, as a pure publicity stunt, offering one or two (they never say how many) air tickets to a popular destination at an absurdly low price.
Yes I tried too. There mustn't have been many tickets at all. I tried first at around 7:30 in the morning and couldn't find any dates that suited. I eventually got one and put passenger details etc in and SBB.ch crashed. After that the website just took an eternity to load anything so I gave up. Pretty disappointed in sbb.ch to be honest, it's always been really difficult to book any international ticket online but I reckon the offer itself was pretty poor when realistically very few people had a chance of taking up the offer.
Thanks for the feedback. It’s disappointing to see that the SBB and TGV didn’t make it clear that tickets were limited. I expected better from them.
Normally, the French pay half for a return ticket with SNCF compared to what SBB asks us to pay. My mother in law often pays around EUR 90 for a return ticket in 1st class (Paris-Zurich).
We always get our tickets from the local French train station- and as we are retired we can plan early. TGV tickets are sold like EasyJet- price depends on demand, peak times, etc- so it is worth being flexible. The staff at the local French station take it on as a challenge to find the very best price, on the best day... They also explained that tickets becomce available 90 days before- and that is the optimum time to buy cheap.
I bought my tickets around 10.54 pm on thursday evening.
Each way for 20 sfr , will travel dec.20 and return dec. 21
