The Au Pair/Nanny employment thread (no ads!)

After reading the above, can someone explain why France, Belgium, Luxembourg are excluded.

We have just sent letters to a young French lady, and really need to know if I now need to retract the offer??

I think the Genevan au pair programme is meant to teach au pairs French, and in Belgium, France and Luxembourg French already is a national language.

This is just a short answer, normal service will be resumed Monday.

If this is the case, where the Au pairs are meant to learn French, why can we not hire an English speaking Au Pair, who would as part of the set out package learn French.

Is this not a contradiction of the rules??

Rob & Michelle

EDIT: As an English speaking family we can then only hire: Austrian, Finnish, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Swiss

Can someone that has hired an Au Pair before confirm this please.

Rob

I think the rationale for this is that they are meant to live with a French-speaking family.

A couple of good information points form different websites:

http://www.aupair-world.net/index.php/visa/switzerland/

http://aupair-visa-switzerland.greataupair.com/

Fingers crossed, we are discussing / interviewing with some very good candidates from both of these sites, will update more as the official info comes in.

For the French part of Switzerland, native French speakers aren't allowed. The au pair program is a cultural exchange program and therefore it is deamed that the native French speakers have the same culture as the French part of Switzerland. Similarly if you are a native Emglish speaker, you cannot employ an English speaking au pair.

We are in the process of employing an au pair from Hungary. We want to pay the going rate of CHF1300 / month and are in the process of pputting a contract together. My question is this CHF1300 taxable? If so I guess we have to go through all the paperwork in order to get her, her L permit.

Hi

I am astounded at how difficult it is to find childcare in Switzerland. Krippe places, Horts, mittagstisch and private krippe such as Montessori are all full for a long while to come... amazing!

I am looking for a part time Tagesmutter/nanny/au pair to cover 2 maybe 3 days a week in Dübendorf (just outside Zürich) starting asap so that I can work. I have a 2 and a 4 year old.

I am also posting on www.liliput.ch , www.kijiji.ch and Babysitting24.ch.

I am English and my husband is swiss so one or both of these languages would be ideal.

Please let me know should anyone have any contacts or leads!

Thanks

Suzanne

Yes tax must be paid. Attached is what we received today from profilia.ch just by calling and asking. The employment office contact we had, who should have sent this 3 weeks ago, is now on holiday until September 1st.

The docs are in French but the figures contained in DirectivesVD.pdf really do spell out the whole situation.

Hope this helps, BTW the AuPair we where meant to face 2 face interview this evening, sent a text 1hr before meeting "Sorry found another family, thanks for thinking of me, have a nice evening"

At the mo - totally gutted as candidates are now thin on the ground. I am meant to be back at the coal face Aug 15th, now not looking likely.

Anybody with suggestions, please come forth.

P.S. This info is for the VD canton, but sure the difference cannot be that much between the others.

Hello again

I am meeting a few potential nannies at the moment to work part time (perhaps 2 10 day hours) so 20 hours a week. I see the average going rate for a nanny full time and can do the maths for what they should receive but do not know where to find out about the extra social payments and taxes that we would have to cover for her.

Does anybody know where I would be able to find out this information and set everything up so that it would be legal and run smoothly? I am guessing nanny agencies would sort this but as I am finding the nannies myself I would rather avoid paying the commission to these agencies. Or is this the only official way?

Many Thanks for any advice you could give.

Suzanne

We are going through the same process and I am speaking to the accountant which is helping us and he also does my tax return.

The important things as far as I can see is that the contract is accepted by the authorities, the deductions and tax are handled as well as the insurance and health issues. The costs may be offset against your personal tax, if you submit a tax return. Our accountant said that we can offset CHF4000 per child per year against your tax return.

Is it your accountant that will fix all of this for you? Where do you get a contract from? Did you draw it up yourself? sorry for all the questions!

There are many sample contracts available on the web, I am not sure however whether there is a differentiation under Swiss law between an au pair and nanny. We put the contract together ourselves, but the bones of it may have to be translated into German for the authorities!

Anyone had any experiences employing a nanny / au pair themselves and dealing with the authorities?

Hi,

I can't believe how many people on this site are always saying how hard child care is to find around here.

I have been advertising that i am looking for a part-time nanny job and i look every day and see loads of others looking for similar work to me!

Then i see loads of parents looking for nannys that i reply to and never get back to me!!!

All parents dont forget to look under nannys looking for work as well and you might find someone to work for you.

Hi im working as an Au pair in Zurich at the moment...and as part of the requirements am looking for a German school to do my language study. Are there any Au Pairs who are currently studying, and could recommend a school? Before i started working i attended Migros for 1 month, but would like to go to a school where there might be more people my age -25.

Thanks

Our au pair arrives next week and as an employer we have to sort out her medical, accident and travel insurance. Can anyone recommend a good insurance policy that we can take up on our new au pairs behalf.

hi telandy

I am a working nanny and the family that employed me got my insurance cover through atupri. They were the cheapest company at the time 3 years ago (but maybe things have changed i dont know!) but with the basic cover i was fine...it even got me through pregnancy!!!
