The EV thread

Additionally the manufacturing costs of EVs fall when economies of scale kick in and battery pack prices too. We are reaching the stage where EVs will be cheaper than ICE cars.
It’s similar to computer electronics…

Batteries on wheels depreciate even faster

This seems like an important news, BYD the game changer of EV will be selling in Switzerland by Emil Frey group

Announced 28 February 2024. Seems not so much has moved in the year since then.

A car battery is not governed by Moore’s law. Price history of an AA battery might be a better analogy

A different model applies here: a high cost European product is replaced by a cheep Asian one. Think worker rights, social safety net, environment protection, or rather lack thereof.

The real game changer would be if BYD bypassed the entitled Swiss intermediaries in the same way the parallel car import is done from the EU.

What should be exciting is that compared to the EU, imported Chinese EV below a certain weight will not attract punitive tariffs tariffs here.

I wonder if one could reimport a Chinese car originally imported to EU and get the special EU duty reimbursed…

Its actually a good idea to go with a trusted household name like AMAG. Puts a certain guarantee on the product. Still I would wait a few years. If BYD is still with AMAG than perhaps consider it from a consumer perspective.

BYD already have a strong presence in Europe with their European HQ (BYD Europe B.V) being established in 1998. Their warranties (6-year/150,000 km warranty on the vehicle, 8-year/200,000 km on the battery and a 8-year/150,000 km on the electric motor) are pretty comprehensive and Pan-European.

So worst case you just get it towed across the border to a garage in France or Germany if there was no dealer here.

Since Switzerland has no car industry to protect, we should welcome Chinese competition giving a cheap option for Swiss consumers and forcing competitors to have better value offerings.

Or Switzerland might use joining the EU tariffs as a bargaining chip to negotiate acces to EU financial services or pharmaceutical market barriers or such like.

A fantastic offer for EV owners to charge at half price in Switzerland (CHF 0.28 per KW) at AMAG fast chargers. I’m currently paying CHF 0.47 at my local Tesla Supercharger which is one of the cheapest national rates for DC fast charging.

The offer seems to run to the end of the year.

Only problem I am having in getting any new car is that they are now all so creepy.

“The Australian attitude toward things like industrial subsidies is if you want to waste your taxpayers’ money subsidizing vehicles you’re going to sell to us, then thank you very much,” McKay added with a laugh.

But in Australia, which has no auto industry of its own to protect with tariffs, Chinese EVs are suddenly everywhere. They now make up roughly one-third of electric vehicles sold here, and more than two-thirds if Tesla’s Chinese-made cars are included.

Won’t believe the battery recharges in 5 mins until I see it. And then, I will be scared of 1MWh (1000V * 1000A) passing by the cable

This development is great, but a few years of trial and error. The curious part if that the 1MWh recharge will be available in an SUV and a 4-door sedan which costs 48k USD in China. It’s as ugly as SUVs can be, but…400km range in 5 mins. The sedan is another Honda Accord, not bad.

I’ve been looking for dates but have not found anything yet. I’d assume before end of year.

These are publicity stunts, until I see them here.
Most Chinese cars sold here have underwhelming fast charging - because most chargers in China don’t deliver that much anyway, apparently, and people mostly charge at home.
