The Robot Apocalypse is closer than you think

Geez! I really need to reboot.

BREED everyone BREED!!!

Before we are overrun!!

Outnumber them before they outnumber us!!

or at least keep practising..

Don't forget Battlestar Galactica (the new series out of Vancouver). The pilot for the spin-off, 'Caprica', which goes to back when the robots were being developed and virtual reality starting to be used was very well done. I went to a Future Trends conference a few days after watching the pilot and the issues discussed there were surprisingly in this pilot.

Yeah, so Asimov would be good right now.

You are Stephen Hawking and I claim my ten pounds!

An interesting article on re-examining Asimovs Laws. Apparently, they don't go nearly far enough... It also discusses who is to blame when these things go out of control.

That article also links to another one , which is a tragic story that, to be honest, kind of hammers home the point. It also kind of reminds me of the malfunctioning ED-209 in Robocop

"... The anti-aircraft weapon, an Oerlikon GDF-005, ..."

I'm sayin' nuttin'!!!

[ Except possibly... “S*d it, the bl**dy thing’s stuck again!” ]

.

As a South African who has delt with Armscor in the past I can tell you that this is not the first time they have had "issues" testing prototypes. These guys are very much "stick it together with some duct tape and hit the button again" kind of guys.

Great. Now they can lie to each other. If they'll lie to their own kind, imagine what they'd do to a human...

Roland, I'd keep a close eye on that Roomba of yours...

Oh hooray. At last... Swarms of killer micro robots...

I-SWARM

Congratulations to whatever genius came up with this. Because Robo-Penguin's, BigDog, Carnivorous Robots and psychotic Oerlikon anti aircraft systems aren't enough of a problem...

Alt Text for this XKCD is:

We live in a world where there are actual fleets of robot assassins patrolling the skies. At some point there, we left the present and entered the future.

By that time, we would have colonised Moon, Mars and maybe few other planets, Robots could inherit Earth

You give our species way too much credit, Derv.

In July 1969, the USA put Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the Moon. At the time, everyone was predicting colonies up there within 3 decades. What happened? Not much. Everyone lost interest and it wasn't until the Chinese decided they wanted some of that Moon action that they decided to go back.

Jump forward to 2029, and I'd lay money that it won't be the Moon or Mars that we're worrying about...

Hmmm "Moon Landings"... does any of you guys question it.. e.g.

1) They cannot land a Rocket like vehicle vertically on Earth, but managed to do it on the moon?

2) Taking off from earth requires a special platform and 3 booster rockets to travel the distance from Earth to moon, but no such thing while making the journey back to Earth? (Mind you, standing on Moon you would have to look up, to see the Eaarth)

3) Series of mishaps and freak accidents killing 2 previous intended crews of Apollo mission?

As usual, Derv, your scientific understanding is flawed to the point of being religion. If you want to talk about hair brained conspiracy theories, I suggest you have a chat with our resident Conspiracy Expert, Zurcher

Theres no harm in questioning things, it onlyshows that you can Think

... but choose not to. Apparently.

I would like to thank you for this usefull post.

Derv, the key to most of your seriously rubbish points would be "gravity". No, not the sauce for the potatoes.

They didn't land a rocket-like vehicle on the moon either; they used a lunar lander.

So where do you think the broadcasts of The Clangers came from, if it

wasn't from the moon? Eh? I mean, there's no way the Soup Dragon is

an earthly being.
