The Union Flag (or Jack). How cool or admired is it in CH?

Some great ideas and feedback, just got home and too tired now to get into details but keep the feedback coming, I'll reply again tomorrow afternoon. I particularly like Nickys idea of a multi coloured flag..... and DB, I am already planning on a flag made of different cheeses for the Royal Wedding, blue from Wales, Vintage Red Leicester from England and cheddar from Scotland.

I just need to work out how to implement these extra ideas into action,

thanks everyone again and please keep the discussion going. Free cheese to the best ideas!

Like they say; Less is more.

Skip the extra cross, keep it clean and beautiful:

I'm not being political, just stating the name of the country.

Have a great chees fest

Oldest car i know, was already mentioned in the old testament ." And he went with TRIUMPH to Heven" or something like that

To be clear, as most Swiss people tend to be Anglophone to some extent, and this does not mean anything in regard to command of English language or knowledge of English history etc, the Union Jack in Switzerland is quite popular.

You now refer to cuisine, but British Cheese, British Patisserie, British Whisky (or Whiskey if from the Republic ! ) and British Teas are quite popular.

And then look about modern music. The British version of Rock n 'Roll known here as "Beat" in the 1960ies was taken over in full overhere

Not really, no, BUT you can see that THIS flag is nicely accepted in regard to beer etc

is nicely accepted !

Grumpygrapefruit,

I reread your concern regarding the ostentatious display of the union jack as being in bad taste. I have met a lot of people from the UK that are very sensitive to it.

I wouldn't worry about it. The Swiss won't mind (including myself) and will only see the cool "factor" and none of the loaded political or nationalistic connotation.

On the other hand the Swiss flag used on Swiss products makes me cringe... while you probably wouldn't care!

Cannut,

Hmm! Triumph in England was founded by a German immigrant, Siegfried Bettmann From Nuremberg.

Kind of like this?...

One of your inventions Texaner? A personal bomb shelter?

There must be a market for the Union Jack in Switzerland as Kare in Dietlikon have been selling some pretty funky Union Jack furniture for a while.

Attached are a few examples...

Northern Ireland is its official name and the old Province of Ulster did comprise 12 counties. However, having lived there, I can tell you people locally, depending on their political or ethnic viewpoint, refer to the Northern Ireland (ie the 6 counties) variously as:

1. Northern Ireland

2. Ulster

3. the Province

4. The North of Ireland

5. The North

6. The Six Counties

Ulster is very rarely used these days to refer to the old Province of nine counties. If you see it, it usually refers exclusively to the six counties of Northern Ireland and its institutions:

ie. The Ulster Unionist Party, Ulster Bank, BBC Radio Ulster, University of Ulster, Ulster TV, Ulsterbus, Ulster Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Museum of Ulster etc etc

This flag with the yellow background is the flag of the old nine counties province. I've never seen it flown anywhere in Northern Ireland. The "Red Hand of Ulster" flag you see flown everywhere there has a white background with a crown and six pointed star representing the six counties. It's no longer flown from government buildings but you'll see it painted on walls and flown in Loyalist communities on a huge scale.
