I'm off to EMWA too, and planning to stay for the weekend after it (after a Saturday morning course, boo).
Friedrichshain for me. Specifically Boxhagenerplatz. Thats on the eastern side, its a little more grubby. We had such an awesome time staying around there. But you'll have to party and not worry too much about the noise

Haven't used it yet, but a friend from Vienna mentioned to me that it has cheap flights. Might be worth a shot.

You can get cheap flights from Berlin to Basel.
