Won’t go into much detail, but during my time in the university in CH one student committed suicide. The graduate student community is not the healthiest one. Stress, loneliness, isolation, culture shock, low income/resources…what a cocktail. I’d say this is some relevant information missing in the reporting.

I think we can agree that this horrific act has been covered by the media; however, if you’re looking for details as to why and how, I personally believe the police can’t just “speculate” and they’ll probably release a statement or give some interviews at some point…

Imagine the anxiety many parents will have from now on. I know the media is supposed to report the news, but if done excessively “wild” it will go way beyond the purpose of informing people. This is what I don’t like about certain media outlets.

I read a full spectrum of UK press as well as Swiss press and the difference is quite stark. UK press will go through your trash looking for a nugget of gossip.

It’s fact that people say it. I should think if they say it, they believe it too.

I don’t think I need to use the word “anecdotal” if I post something similar same as I don’t think I’d need to say “The fictional film Star Wars” when commenting on George Lucas’s film.

If I get knocked off my bike - is that only anecdotal unless I get a Police report?

I think you’re getting a bit carried away as to the importance of your position as junior moderator.

The only place where media is pushed on people is with screens on buses, trams and gasoline pumps. Otherwise, media consumption is voluntary. No one forces people to read papers, websites or watch TV.

Anyway, if not mentioned by the media, I’ll have the pleasure to tell it: there’s a mental health crisis in the graduate student community. This is a recent study for PhDs in Sweden, but it’s a proxy for the whole environment.

I am absolutely sure he will be assessed by psychiatrists…what a horrible, horrible thing to do.
I would speculate that he has serious mental health issues.

Just remembering the guy who kept hostages in a train near Yverdon-les-Bains in Vaud. The story of how someone already identified with mental health issues slipped through the cracks of the system was reported by journalists. It’s an open question if some actions are taken after the information was published. But, at least the info became public.

Yes, I remember that case. One more time: I think the details of this story will be public too (as they should be, undeniably) but you can’t ask the police to release info they don’t have yet. He’s arrested and investigated.
I don’t think there’s any “conspiracy” from the police to keep the public “uninformed”.

Following the silence from Police, speculation arises.

Would you expect much comment from the police? I remember in the village where I live, a pensioner stabbed and killed a young boy.

Apart from the initial reporting, nothing more came of it. I guess details typically only appear when/if cases go to court and become public.

Sometimes I wonder what happens but a google search never seems to find any follow up.
It probably does and I just don’t find it or the case has not yet gone to the courts.
