Trade in old car?

Looking to buy a new (used) car next year and sell the old one. Really I could do with the money from the old one for the purchase of the new one, but don't want to be without a car or have the hassle of selling it myself.

In the UK a car dealer would take your old car as a trade in against your new one, regardless of make (sure you might not get the best price). Do car dealers/garages do that here in Switzerland?

Also can you do part trade in, part cash, part finance if necessary?

A lot of garages will do a trade in and give you a lowball on the trade in value.

But convenience has a price as well I suppose.

Traded in last car for current set of wheels. But assume car shouldn't be too old. All depends upon the dealer. Drove the old car until the new one arrived. No problem. Hakuna Matata!

The big guys like AMAG and Emil Frey will just turn up their noses at such a suggestion. Try garages that are independent.

Emil Frey took my car as part exchange and gave a better offer than I was getting through Autoscout.

A lot depends on if the car is sellable or not as not all cars are !

Ask the garage what they'll give you and put it on Ricardo

My girlfriend bought a new scooter this year and had her old one as trade-in. The garage made an offer of 200 chf for the old scooter. We negotiated that the trade in was mentioned in the purchase contract, but that we could choose not to trade it in.

I then put it on Ricardo for 220 chf (extra 20 for the Ricardo costs). We had a first offer within a day so we cancelled the trade-in option at the dealer. The old scooter went on to fetch over 700 chf...

My garage gave me 7500 for my old car... I was chuffed!

But then I saw it later on autoscout, my same car... 11500... it sold within 2 weeks!

Got the feeling that most Swiss prefer to buy from a dealer and are willing to pay extra for it. Believe it's a matter of trust. Speaking from experience, selling privately is not easy. Especially if the car is nothing special, over 7 years and 100K. Especially in CH. Expect, crazy offers and be ready to be talked down in price. The types who shop for used cars like to play hardball.

Emil Frey took my ancient Smart in and gave me 1K off the price of the new car.

Could I have gotten more if i sold it privately? Maybe. Worth the hassle? Not to me. When it comes to cars, convenience weighs more heavily than price in my decisions.
