He doesn’t have that long… only until November 2026 mid-terms. Unless he stops burning things down, the economy isn’t going to recover by then.
This is fantastic news for the magnificent US watch industry. Can only think that made in USA will prosper.
In addition, with Less products being shipped to the US. Most shipping ports and airports can be reduced in size. This and Lower freight transport will mean less environmental impact. So in the end who needs a Paris Accord. Trump is addressing the climat change problem his way.
That assumes all trade is to or from the USA. It isn’t. Products will contract to be made and sold, just shipped elsewhere.
My assumption is based on the significant fact that the USA till now has been the worlds #1 importer of goods.
And that Swiss watches have been mostly exported to the USA. But Swiss watches are mostly a passion of rich men where cost is irrelevant anyway. So Swiss will still fly em in. Who knows! Now instead of having shopping trips to NYC it will now be reversed and rich Americans can shop the Bahnhoffstrasse after visiting their UBS customer advisor.
Scenario from OEC
I am skeptical of such models because they usually are too static and don’t consider non-tariff trade barriers. But it is a cool tool to play with.
I believe there’s a lot of pharmaceutical exports CH → US, as well as industrial machinery (packaging machines and stuff like that).
Now what? Tax AWS, Azure and Google Seach queries?
Are people gonna pivot to using LibreOffice and Proton Mail instead?
China tariff 54%
I suspect China will turn to labelling goods with signs like “made in Singapore” which only has a 10% tariff.
Trump attacking the whole world will push them into ganging up against him.
The most challenging task will be finding enough new customers to replace the US, probably only partially successful.
I do have to say that there is merit in the idea of forcing countries to be less export-oriented because it’s not healthy or sustainable in the long-term.
I am not sure if this is the right way - but then, it hasn’t really be seriously tried before, so it is what it is.
It looks like a rather abrupt change. Integrated complex economies tend to love this. Also, look at when the last tariff spike was and what an economy this created.
This is nothing but ignorance, arrogance and incompetence.
Pharmaceuticals are excluded from the new tarifs.
Perhaps Switzerland should consider an export ban on pharmaceuticals, or at least a 32% export tariff. Yes 1% more.
Orange clown
British Indian Ocean Territory 10% tariff, the only people there are at the U.S. base at Diego Garcia.
Um, no. Exporting is healthy and it can be done sustainably. To take your argument to its logical conclusion each state in the USA should start imposing tariffs on the other States. Tariffs have been tried before and they are still used within bounds to protect some home industries - by almost all countries. Trade is not a zero sum game. Globalisation has a bad name but the reality is that the way forward means grasping this nettle and finding workable solutions to difficult issues such as trade imbalances, armed conflict, climate change, mass migration etc etc. The trump administration is showing how not to go about it.
President Trump unveiled tariffs of at least 10% Wednesday on virtually the entire world, with one notable exception: Russia.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told Axios Wednesday that Russia was left off because U.S. sanctions already “preclude any meaningful trade.”
However, the U.S. still trades more with Russia than with countries like Mauritius or Brunei that did make Trump’s tariffs list.
- Even remote island territories like Tokelau (pop. 1,500) in the South Pacific and Svalbard (pop. 2,500) in the Arctic Circle — territories of New Zealand and Norway, respectively —were listed for tariffs.
- However, Leavitt noted that Cuba, Belarus and North Korea were also not included because existing tariffs and sanctions on them are already so high.
That makes more sense actually
On the Swiss news last night they said something like we don’t charge the US tariffs apart from agriculture goods (they were hoping Trump was not aware of those, LOL). So where he took those 61% from was a riddle until you posted the “explanation”.
well, those darn creatures never imported anything from the US. I guess the “reciprocal” tariff now is 100%?
Been using Open Office for decades now.
Do think about changing my laptop to Linux sooner than planned as my PC is running fine on it.
We all will
Strange how Trump blames the rest of the world for the US having to import more than being able to export. To me it’s simple: They obviously don’t have enough things to offer that other people want.
yeah, well, Robert F. Kennedy won’t need those though.
Last week, the plan of the Swiss government was to export “quality” to USA manufacturing (open article from TA).
I have not seen any reaction of the Federal Council yet. What’s going on? Press releases today are about toxic algae in lakes, water wheels, consumer price index for March 2025, and sustainable development.
