TVs....where to start?

a point to note - anything less than 40", I challenge you to spot the difference between 1080p and 720p. So save your money

I have a 32" Bravia which does 720p and I do have a KiSS box upscaling to 576p for DVD and soft content playback - it's good. Viewed from about 10'

I will be hooking up a Macintosh computer to the TV (for DVD watching, etc.). Does the HDMI also work easily with a Mac? Is the "PC in" a better way to go?

Anyone have experience hooking up a Mac to a LCD flat screen that has all those cool features (HDMI, PC in, etc.)?

HDMI if the Mac has it will (should) give audio + video.

Couldn’t agree more. Bought a Panasonic plasma 50 inch about 7 months ago and hooked it up with a DM 5000, Denon (Amp) AV-A1, Denon DVD-A1 and a Twix-5000 all connected to 4 Piega speakers, a Piega sub plus of course the biggest Piega centre on the market – works like a charm (although not sure our neighbours agree) For a good insight to what size to buy, see http://whathifi.com/home-cinema/archive/2007/05/31/how-to-choose-the-right-size-of-tv.aspx . On www.whathifi.com you can also find a lot of interesting info regarding Plasma versus LCD.

I don’t really go for the mediamarkets of this world, prefer good service and no discussion when something goes south (v. bad experience with mediamarket in the past)... My preferred hifi shop in Zurich is Seeholzer at Loewenstrasse. Good general service (good English skills) delivery and installation service. Can only say, I never had any problems with this outfit.

I have only found a few channels that I can actually change to English from Cablecom. I was surprised that most of the American TV shows did not have the option to change from the German/French/Italian channels on Cablecom. I wonder if I am doing something wrong. I managed to change Discovery Channel from German to English, so I don't think I am missing anything. Any ideas?

i have been seeking a TV and ran across this article

http://www.cleverdis.com/pdf_files/spr_sharp_06_uk.pdf

It contains an interview with a Sharp Electronics executive. It is obviously biased towards Sharp products, but does provide some useful explanatory information about the TV technology.

After much searching and viewing I will opt for a Panasonic TX-32LXD700F.

The following might also help you understand the benefits of going for one resolution/size over another:

Also agree that plasmas are a dead-end technology. Go for LCD everytime.

Best,

Macs don't do HDMI (yet). If you want to hook up a Mac to an HD panel, use DV. You'll have to connect the Mac to a surround sound receiver via optical if you want to get 5:1, although very few apps can actually make use of 5:1 on the Mac.

From memory, Apple's DVD player can as can VLC. iTunes doesn't quite do it yet, although I hear that HD trailers played back through it make use of Dolby Pro Logic II, which isn't the best.

Best,

A

just a brief comment to reinforce what has already been stated - go check out the tvs in person. but be sure to play around with the settings, most of the tvs i looked at had the brightness and contrast set at a maximum value which is not my preference. also, stand at a distance that is equivalent to the distance you will be watching in your home (do you wear glasses when you watch?). technical specs are great, but your perception and preferences are far more important.

Does anyone know of a ENGLISH website from which I can buy a TV stand and possible a TV to be delivered to my home in Zurich? All the websites for Switzerland are in Italian, France and Deutsch... ? Thank you.

www.netto24.ch has amazing prices and they deliver all over Switzerland. But, the site is not in English. Just open the web page in your browser and open a second window with google translate ( http://translate.google.com/translate_t ). Then translate the page or small blocks of text as you proceed. It takes longer, but will help you learn the language a bit and get you a good price on a TV.

Also know that places like Pfister and Ikea deliver (same issue with translating though). You might find a different selection of TV stands there.

especially if buying a new TV that isn't 1080 HD.

Sky reckon they aren't gonna be broadcasting fully HD til 2012. At the moment - its just wildlife and landscapes.

So if you aren't particularly bothered about the definition on a goats gonats or don't need to feel like you're actually there to watch 2 giraffes shagging - lots of bargains to be had on HD 'ready' TV's that do the job just as well (whats an 1080i and 1080p amongst friends).

I shopped around and just got myself a 50 inch plasma HD 'ready' for half the price of a 1080 HD 40inch LCD. And from the (limited, I really can't be arsed) research i did, LCD's still struggle to actually match the picture quality of Plasma.

"honestly, who throws a shoe?"

I am actually looking for a big tv , HD ready etc. Where did you get yours and how much did you pay , if you don't mind me asking ? I need something to complement the PS3 I got some months ago

Samsung PS5OC91 50inch plasma from Fust(?) for CHF2999. I looked at the internet options - but all seemed to want to charge 2.9% (or there abouts) for using a credit card online (so negating the saving online). I'm sure if you shop around you're get it even cheaper. But came with free delivery and I got to see all the TV's in the shop showing HD shagging sheep and could therefore make the viewing opinion on what sheep looked the more natural in person. Something you can't do over the internet.

Has 2 HDMI sockets in the back - so more than capable of connecting blue ray (but why would you at this stage) and consoles to ones explosive delights.

I was looking at the new Pioneers KURO's at CHF14000 - but seriously - who can justify that kind of expense even without a girlfriend

By the time HD is actually broadcast by all channels - any purchase now will save a bundle (especially if only used for the 'need for speed' or 'Halo') and will make a great addition as a secondary TV for the bedroom etc if one ignores the new tech and opts for the savings offered on yesterdays tech.

just my opinion of course and if one chooses to listen to the voices in my head......

I see nobody has posted on this forum for a year. Wondering how much has changed since then. I am planning to get about a 32inch flat screen. Want it to also be able to play streaming directly off my Mac. What can anybody recommend?

LCD uses less power (normally) than Plasma and is normally lighter, also better for anti-glare (less affected by sunlight).

My advice would be to go somewhere that you can look at a large range of TV's like Media-Markt in Sihl-City or Dietlikon. Then you get to see the sets in person (maybe do a bit of reasearch on the Web first including getting some prices of make/models that interest you).

For reivews, checkout CNET and AVS Forum's

Things to 'bear in mind':

Size of screen

Reslolution: HD-Ready (720p), Full HD (1080p) - recommended for 40" up

Connections: including number of HDMI connections (what do you want to connect now and in the future).

HDMI version: 1.3a (best)

Contrast ratio: the higher the better, but vary dramitically due to the different ways these are measured.

refresh rate: 5ms or better is good for sport/fast moving action.

Even if you don't have any HD content, if you are investing in this for several years, then this will become a factor. Even if you just have an upscaler for your DVD collection (upscalling players are really cheap). Also the PS3 with Blu-Ray is great.

Great suggestions in this thread! I am looking for a mid size LCD TV (70-90 in) to connect it to a Wii. Any specific suggestions about TVs that connect to Wii? Any good and cheap models you would recommend? Thanks in advance.
