This is a really good deal I bought the 30 day version as I think I will easily use it all with hiking and skiing!

1. What is the definition of a year? 12 months from first use or a calendar year?
2. Are they effectively GA by the day? GAs do have some added benefits over half-fare card tickets.

No, not effectively GAs. They are effectively a Tageskarte. Since you have to have the halbtax though, you already have the benefits (mainly mountain line discounts), right? Or are there further benefits?
You have to define the date when the 365 days start when you buy the tickets, but you don't actually have to use the first ticket on that day. I bought a 20-day pack, starting on 13 July, but in the end used my first ticket 3 days later.
That's the advantage of these tickets, you decide, even at the last minute, when you want to use them. The ones in your commune you have to plan in advance.
Hmm when I bought mine I didn't have to select a date for them to be used, at least not that I remember.
Another complex product from SBB. Public transport is still very expensive. It's only for Halbtax holders and can't be shared.
Can they provide their excellent service for a lower price? There doesn't seem to be public pressure for them to to do it.
Now you can buy monthly (30 days actually), non-renewable GA for 420 CHF. Perfect for the summer if you're staying in Switzerland.

Try driving and see how expensive it really is (amortisation of car or lease payment, insurance, tax, maintenance, fuel, parking.......)

In Graubünden, the BÜGA (a GA for GR, which extends to Landeck, Chiavenna and Bellinzona) is half price until the end of July.
I have a car and have no need for Halbtax. Paying in advance for 20 trips which I can't share with family and friends isn't worth it - Many people will probably won't use all 20 trips.
For a group , or even as a couple, car is still a lot cheaper.
If the offer would allow sharing I would consider buying it and use it with visitors.
My partner and I bought the 30 days last year. I used 29. He used 28. And we didn't have the 30% off.
At 28CHF/day, these are a no brainer for people who take many weekend or day trips. Kids tag along for free with the Juniorkarte, which is just 30CHF annually. We travel extensively throughout the country and I'd wager we spend significantly less on transport costs than someone with a car, factoring in cost of the car, fuel, insurance, parking, etc.
And they're so flexible. I can activate a day on the way to the tram stop, day of. Kid wakes up with a fever or the weather is bad? No problem, no money wasted. I really don't find SBB to be particularly complicated...
This offer is good value for organized people without a car who have kids under 16.
If the SBB wants to appeal to the rest of the population they'll have to come up with another offer.
Please stop writing absolute crap. The offer is appealing to ANYONE, regardless of having children, who would otherwise be spending 50-100chf per ticket (with halbtax) for hikes, skiing and other day trips etc. Each ticket is objectively a significant money saver when travelling longer return distances. Fact.
If you find it "complicated to understand" then I am not sure the fault lies with SBB.
