Type rating for sure, but you may be right about a contract pilot needing to undergo company training before being allowed to fly the jet (even though they may be type rated to fly it).
In an inflight emergency however, any pilot will do There was a story of a military pilot who stepped in to take over the radios and checklists, relieving the pressure on the remaining pilot.

It was a US airline flying a B757. B757 production ended in October 2004 so there are relatively few pilots type rated. US regulations require pilots flying US aircraft be licensed by them.
