Unlocked iPhone with Sunrise Service

Hi, yea, I also have a Swisscom "Data Easy" SIM card (for meant with use with USB data sticks plugged to laptops) and it's the same as you described above, ie: can't use it for voice calls. As noted, you can get 250MB per month for 8 CHF as an extra service on your voice account with Sunrise, which isn't bad for casual surfing, but not enough for heavy users.

Swisscom has a 5 CHF/day max cap with their phone data plans:

...not sure why Sunrise isn't offering something similar? Maybe they will soon.

PS- Don't do any dual-SIM hacking.

Hi irish_marmot,

You need your US SSN in order to buy an iPhone in the US.

OK. Here's the real deal, die Wirklichkeit, as they say. Three weeks ago I got a T@keaway Max plan, signed up online, and got my SIM and USB modem in the mail two days later. I still haven't opened the modem, as I popped the SIM out of its card and put it directly in my iPhone. I followed the instructions except the part where you activate the card (#21* or something). I wanted to see how it worked in raw form. Now I'm hesitant to activate it, because everything works great. I mean everything - internet 3G/Edge, SMS and Voice. That's right, voice! I did a test run to see how much it cost, and according to my first bill, which only covered 5 days, calls are about 35rp/min and SMS are 19rp. A bit more expensive then prepaid. Internet is Unlimited (well, 10GB). f yeah. So it looks like this is going to work. I'll know more when I get a full bill, with fixednet calls and other mobile network calls. They don't send a call by call history like they do with the voice, so I'm not sure exactly how the charges work. Maybe it's per second (that would be .638 rappen/sec). And you don't get a voicemail box. I actually like that part.

But don't tell everybody or Sunrise may yank it. On the other hand, if they're anything like Sprint in the US, they'll let you bend the rules as long as you're paying for it, and the competition won't know what's going on because it's all unofficial. Sprint's unofficial no-harm-no-foul policy toward bluetooth tethering won them lots of customers.

Oh, and also if you want to get Skype, Furk, Simplify, etc working over 3G, get voIPover3G from Cydia. Naturally you have to be Jailbroken for this.

Oh, and I haven't tried MMS yet. But I don't really care so much about that.

Hello - coming back to the original question (just for surfing, nothing fancy). i successfully unlocked my iphone ( i tested with an SFR sim that picked up swisscom), and now I intend to go to sunrise and get Sunrise flat max https://eshop.sunrise.ch/es/dyn/mes/rateplan and plonk in the Iphone. ENd of story. Am I missing sthing or will it just work ? also, could not find the 7.50CHF data plan to add to a voice plan. thanks for any help. regards

Yes you can just drop in the Sunrise SIM and it will work. You may need to configure the APN under Settings>General>Network>Cellular Data Network, all three fields "internet", but that's it.

Regarding the 7.50fr/250MB, either you can't add that to the Flat Max because it's already part of it, or they've stopped offering it. I think it's still in there though, for the plans without a data package.

However, about the original question in this thread, it wasn't about adding data to voice, it was about a data-only plan, which is only supposed to work in a USB modem on a laptop. It's not supposed to work in the iPhone (meaning they'll tell you it doesn't work), but it does. And it has a whopping 10GB throttled cap, as opposed to other data plans' 1GB cap. This is what we were trying to figure out here. Not only does it work, but you can make voice calls (which they'll tell you definitely doesn't work no way no how). So given that, this is the first voice plan with unlimited data in all Switzerland (actually Swisscom has one now- for 169fr/mo with a 2GB cap). And if you're like me, and hardly ever make calls, it's perfect. Oh, and Skype and other VoIP is also possible.

Hi,

I have an iphone 3G, recently bought and was unlocked. I have a Sunrise Sim card inside that was working fine, but suddenly the iphone is unable to locate the network - though seems to recognize the Sim card.

Can anyone help me fix this?

Happens to me too... But, by the time I touch the OK button, the network

is back (or within seconds afterwords).

If you are away from the Sunrise network, then allow automatic network

selection, but be warned that you may incur international roaming costs.

This has happened to me once one my 3Gs, but happens often with my wife's 2G. She's a Schoolteacher, and inside the school they have some sort of "jamming" (ala Spaceballs) or filter in the glass to block signals. Each day when she leaves she has to either toggle airplane mode or reboot in order to find a signal.

I think you can have the network selection set to Automatic and still have international data roaming off, but on Sunrise it's best to leave data off anyway. Just make sure you notice if roaming is on before calling.

Hi, I have an iPhone 3G unlocked with a Sunrise contract. I pay 30 bucks a month plus 6.50 for 250 mb free download time. No one ever gave me a problem. Got the phone from Digitec and the Sunrise contract online. But now you can just wait for the iPhone 4.
