Hi everyone,
Do you guys think it'll be OK to unregister in my gemeinde in the beginning of May, stating that I'm leaving 1st of June, but then actually leave 2 weeks later?
They give the confirmation of unregistering at most 1 month before departure, but I'd like to get it a bit earlier to start getting other stuff done (taxes, terminating contracts, pension fund, etc.).
I'm an EU citizen, so I'll basically be on 2 weeks vacations (I finish my job end of May), then handover the keys to the apartment I'm renting, and fly out...
Any way this can backfire on me?
Have you asked your Gemeinde
The only issue I can see is that if you are not yet registered whereever you will be, then you will not have health insurance.
I would just go there beg of May and tell them your real date and be done and if they ask why so early just tell them you will be on vacation last 2 weeks. I do not think they will refuse you.
But in all honesty that is typically the last step and the last things to be done are not too many. Many contracts you can cancel without the leaving confirmation, I think we only used it for insurance. Pension you will not be able to do before you actually leave I believe, plus would be smart to move your account to Schwyz for example and cash in later etc.

Generally true, but there's a Catch 22.
Zürich total tax (city, canton, plus federal) on a payout of 50k is 2'279 according to the federal tax calcultor (single, no kids, no church tax).
In Schwyz, the canton with the lowest tax burden for pension capital payouts (I'm aware you know but OP won't), the total tax for 50k is 604 CHF (1.21%), so the difference between ZH SZ is less than 1700. Finpension OTOH charges a fee for payouts to people living abroad; IIRC they charge 1500 if payout happens in the first year, 500 otherwise.
So, such a transfer is unlikely to be worth the hassle and the wait for OP as the posting history indicates a fairly recent arrival.
Thanks kri,
The health insurance I don't really care for 2 weeks, so not an issue.
My Pension Fund told me they'll be able to transfer the "super-obligatory" part of the 2nd pillar directly, but they need the Abmeldebestätigung.
And the obligatory part, I think I'll let them transfer to this Substitute Occupational Benefit Institution (aka Stiftung Auffangeinrichtung) - so then I'll deal with them to cash it out after my departure.
The differences in taxes are not worth the hassle for me.
Do you see any drawbacks with having my 2nd pillar funds in Stiftung Auffangeinrichtung compared to other vested benefits accounts?
Makes total sense! I have warned posters before about the difference in tax not being as great as one thinks but did not look into this one carefully enough. Thanks for pointing it out.
Depending on your plans you may want to take out what's called an -> AbredeVersicherung (AR), accident insurance. By law you'll be insured for an additional month after your contract has ended against accidents, domestic and abroad. This can be extended by up to 6 months for 45 per month using the AR, IIRC your payment concludes the contract and the money transfer must have arrived before the existing cover has ended.
The tax office will probably welcome your call and data anytime now, that can be prepared independently from your deregistration (though the bill won't be finalised until after that has happened). You can use Pillar 3a for this year, too.
