Uranium glass

Lets have a nice thread for a change.

Recently I started restoring old-timey gramophones. Done a few, the recent ones have been a Serinade from 1915, this is still in the process as the door needs re-veneering and I am thinking about inlaying a art deco style veneer.

The other one is a beast, it stands up to my chest and is solid white pine, built by the Steidinger company in the Black forest in 192--(I ́m guessing) 1922 to 1927. Well the motor has the Steidinger logo and after 1927 Steidinger came up with a dual- electro-spring wound motor. The company changed their name from Steidinger to "Dual" who built record players up until 1997.

Recently a company here next door in Landsberg bought the rights to the name and have started building top of the range recordplayers again.

Nothing I can afford I can tell you that much, their website doesn ́t give prices, so I imagine that if you want to know the price, you can ́t afford one.

Now, rummiging in the internet for interesting bits and pieces of Gramophones I came across Uranium glass and remembered that my mother had one or two pieces, many, many yonks ago. No idea where they ended up.

So, come last weekend I found two nice looking green uranium glass bowls on Ebay-Kleinanzeigen and at 15 Euros a steal.

Come Monday I fired up the bike, rode to Munich and picked them up. Lovely Art deco glass, sadly they don ́t glow under UV light, but they do look nice on top of the Steidinger.

What have you recently started to collect?

Lint.

I am not, and have never been a collector. But I know many people who collect Uranium glass. There are several specialist groups on Facebook.

Well that and aches and pains. Seriously I wake up in the morning wondering what hurts today.

Magnesium, baybay!

(Seriously, though, that stuff is amazing for aches and pains... proper vitamin D, too!).

I just did a google search for uranium glass, as I don't think I had ever heard of it before, and.. Wow! Very cool!

The problem with Magnesium is that if you accidently overdose your ass turns into a chocolate fountain.

Please don ́t ask how i know.

Up until only recently I never had the urge to collect anything, and if I did then it was pictures and books.

However, the older I get the more I seem to want old things around me. When my mother passed away there was a stack of old 78 schellacs, Dina Shore, Benny Goodman, Jo Stafford, The Andrew sisters among others. I knew from pictures that she had a HMV 109 gram, long gone, but I found one on ebay, bought it and restored it and now it sits on an old sewing machine cabinet and my one room pokey hole under the roof smells wonderfully of shellac varnish.

Been deleting a lot of old emails collected over the years. No idea why. Perhaps while my Onedrive storage is full and I'll be dammed if MS forces me to upgrade.

Ha haa. I know what you're talking about. But I think you were taking the wrong kind. Magnesium glycinate doesn't have that effect like the other forms of magnesium often do (especially magnesium citrate). Mag glycinate is also the best kind for absorption. This is the one I take, in case you do ever want to try it again:

And I promise... no chocolate fountains.

This one is a relatively low dose -- only 150 mg's per tablet. But that's good enough for me to keep the stress down and the body aches away. (normal suggested daily dose of mag for women is 300 mg. and 400 mg's for men).

Anyways, sorry to go off track here... Back to things we collect... I apparently collect Japanese maples because I have 12 different varieties of them in my garden. I can't stop. It's stronger than I am.

(P.S. Oops, I'm sorry that photo came out so large, too late to re-size it, I think).

Nostalgia.

I fear that if I wake up in no pain then I have died in the night.

That would be a bummer. Goes to bed, hot water bottle, night gown and candle and wakes up dead the next morning.

Actually the best way to go ... eventually

Ha haaa. I actually use to wake up with lots of pains until I finally bought a new mattress that has better support. (With my old mattress, I think I was sinking into it too much).

I need to lay off the crisps.

I got a new mattress, don’t bother with a bed as my one-room-pokey-hole-under-the-roof doesn’t support both a mattress and a Couch occupying the floor at the Same Time. So I simply lean it against the wall when not in use.

Also, I confess, one of my guilty pleasures is to take a swan-dive on it at beddy-by-Bobo’s Time and a generic issue IKEA bed would be matchwood in seconds.
