That's exactly - and all - I want!
I use one program 90% of the time, most of the bells and whistles are superfluous for my use, and add only fragility to the machine as far as I have seen. I just want a simple workhorse of a machine.
I went with an expensive pro machine as I was told that was the only way to get the robust dependability of the machines of yesteryear... and yet this is the shortest lived machine yet.
I'll look into the Gorenje.

I'd rather not go 'disposable', but the value of an extended warranty is dependant on the responsiveness of the company. If the company drags it's feet on making timely repairs while under original warranty, you'd have to assume that they would do so again under an extended warranty. In which case, money out the window.
---
A further question:
The company - or rather a bored call center person - is telling me that disconnecting the machine (so that I can install a temporary one) could mean that I'd risk invalidating the warranty. Surely that can't be true, can it?

I'm getting more and more interested in the 'Right To Repair' movement...

Hi meloncollie,
Just checked our communal machines and we have a Zug Unimatic S washer, which is only 8kg capacity, and Zug Unimatic TA dryer. I wouldn't normally pile in on this question if it weren't for these machines being an absolute doddle to use and so efficient. Compared to the previous communal machines we've had, they're both far, far better. They serve 8 people, so do several loads per day.
The 60 degree wash is 1hr 13mins, and the bone dry setting is 1hr 3mins. They make wash day so simple compared the last set up we had where the dryer took over 3hrs to dry anything.
As other people have mentioned, I do still yearn for the 1950s yellow gloss twintub I had when I was 18-22, which could wash and dry a pair of jeans in 30mins.
I live in an apartment complex. Each apartment has its own stacked washer/dryer unit. Every washer and dryer here is sibir, I just looked at the tag -it’s made in Slovenia by gorentje. If you look at the sibir website they mention gorentje.
My model is wa7201l, I think. There is a WA7123 something at netto shop for chf 799....
Not dirt cheap, only 7kg. Not fancy. I think my current one is 4-5 years old. The first one was replaced after about 7 years (previous tenant was here 2 years).
I wash lots of towels at 60 degrees. You can also run shorter cycles (like 30 min off at 60, 40 degrees, and there is a 17 minute 30 degree cycle.
It does a decent job. The 60 degree cycle is 2:30, but you can shorten it to about 2 hrs.
I can easily wash a 160X200 cm down comforter or a 100 cm donut dog bed (not together).it’s more a size than weight issue for a lot of my stuff. I have a 6kg weighted blanket I’m going to try....just need to wait for decent weather so I can dry it outside.
The dryer is meh, takes forever to dry towels....but I put them in late at night and set them to start around 4am.
That sounds absolutely rubbish. Personally I would have asked the call center person to put me on to their manager.
There are loads of valid reasons for disconnecting a machine:
Cleaning underneath it.
Moving it to another location.
Needing the water outlet for something else (drain flushing for example).
Painting the room.
The only valid disconnecting/moving problem I can see that could invalidate a warranty is transporting it to another location without securing the drum with the special bolts that come with it. Not doing this could damage the drum spindle.
Rolling my eyes at this one. There is literally a single connection on a washing machine - the water hose (as the drain hose is not usually permanently plumbed). Unscrew it, attach to the new machine. Before the technician comes, reconnect it.
I've literally never heard so much hogwash in my life.
Those Gorenjes look very interesting.
I found one that does 10kg - model WS168LNST
But I don't see anyone having a proper delivery date for it.
As I mentioned before, if your main reason to get a new one is that you need one immediately, better make sure that you get one which is in stock. So many supply/delivery problems these days due to Covid shutting manufacturing sites and the stuck big boat which seems to have finally reached its destination this week.
Interesting fact - the Gorenje machines are made at a little town in Slovenia called Velenje which has a really cool coal mine -it had one of the biggest coal seams in the world.
You can visit it and have a meal down there. I went there the week it opened.
buy nice or buy twice..... :-)
Therein lies the problem. These days cost and quality do not necessarily correlate.
I bought nice... thrice.
Yet here I am.
Yikes.....Sorry about that.
My default is Miele.
My mom is still rocking an 11 year old Bosch Washing MAchine and Siemens dish Washer. Those remain my go to brands.....
