These have been all the rage in the UK for the last few years, couples have been getting smaller traditional sweet cakes and have been getting whole cheeses and rings to make up a more "grown up" cheese cake. I've been wanting to try one for a while, and I finally got the chance at the wedding of the year last week in Zurich.
Most cheese shops will sell you whole small cheeses or rings, and baby cheeses for the top (there are quite a few small Swiss goat and sheep cheeses in the shape of hearts and church bells which would be very suitable. I used cheese from stock and realise now I should have decorated it more with ribbons etc as well as the dried fruit. I tried to find those cake makers "Greek columns" ro seperate the layers but couldn't find any in time, so used mini ramekins wrapped in ali foil.
This one is all British cheese (of course), about 6 Kg which is enough for about 100 people to have a decent nibble, allow 100 gr per person or a little more if you're going to be using it for a main course. For a smaller wedding, you could get lots of mini, 80 - 100gr, soft cheeses for decoration that your guests can take home.
My wife and I had pumpkin cheese cake served at our wedding - it was one of three desserts and was by far the most popular. I recommend it highly. Savory cheese cakes like the one pictured in this thread can be nice too, but who really wants to have a wheel of Stilton for dessert? Besides, the nuptial evening is sure to be spoiled that way!
One of my weddings, can't remember which one exactly, we had a Jaffa Cake Wedding Cake, lovely chocolate and orange. Oh well, at least one happy memory of that day
Couldn't agree more . Marmite is the devils food.......mind you as far as I'm concerned so is anything chocolate flavoured. Its the real stuff for me or nothing.
You could carve some nice shapes in the cheese as well.
I'll see if I can get hold of some of those "Greek" columns you're after. Wilton does Roman columns - either as a plate and column set or just the columns . Let me know if you're interested in either.
Got to have the traditional wedding cake too, though
Cheese wedding cake and reception at the Rappi Bier Factory..........heaven I reckon As long as it doesn't rain! Just need to persuade someone to get married now so we can all go.
I wished I had one of these at my wedding last year. We had similar sweet tower cake though. Having been married in cheesy Switzerland and had a cheese cake at reception would have been a novelty for sure.
What would that cost? We have a 'wedding' (celebration, really, as the wedlock stuff has already been done) in early September. ~30 for a lunch, although numbers could be up or done ten.
PM me with some idea of the cost (including the getting it to Basel) and notice period required.
Yumm.. my wife and I love the looks and hunger for the taste of it.
