This came up on the Lidl catalogue for 29 January:
Apart from making a phone call when somebody trips the detector, what else does it do.
It just tells you, that you have burglar . By the time you can do anything about it or call the police or whatever, the burglar has long since gone !

Yes that is true. But, if you are asleep in bed and there is someone in your house, wouldn't you prefer to be alerted to that fact? I guess this thing also has a smoke detector which would be useful.
Actually, perhaps, for safety reasons, it it best NOT to know. A burglar is after your goodies, not you- but if you confront them, things can go badly wrong. We have mobile by our beds with direct access to armed neighbours- perhaps more useful.
But most people don't have armed neighbours ( that they know about) so that's not really an option is it?
A loud siren is one of they best methods of scaring them off if the gain access.
Actually, you'd be surprised! Most adults will be active in military service and keep their army gun at home, and many are hunters and shoot as a sport (their arms should be kept under lock and key, but .....). In our case, both are trained in firearms and active senior policemen. But yes, I see what you mean. Another good reason to be on good terms with your direct neighbours- and all have total confidence we would come to each others's rescue if anything goes wrong. I fell on the ice outside the house today and hurt my back and hit my head and saw the stars and just lay there. 10 seconds later both sets of neighbours were there to help.
Just depends whether you have close neighbours who know you, and would actually deal with an alarm ringing and call the police- or shout out of the window, etc. My point was that if you are asleep and burglars break-in, it may be better to sleep through and not challenge them, as it could turn sudenly turn violent. That is what the police told us in the UK.
Personally, I don't think I would challenge anyone that decided to break into the house while we slept. But I would like to have the option to make a sharp exit through a back door with the family. that is not an option you'd have if you sleep through an intrusion.

My point was that if you're asleep when a break in occurs the alarm will scare them off so there won't be any intruders to challenge. The police told us that the noise is a deterrent as most burglars don't want to risk getting caught and will instantly leg it. ( the burglars won't know if the alarm is linked to the police or not and won't hang around to find out)
Given the number of threads on here about noise complaints I would imagine that the neighbours would be complaining to the police instantly if a burglar alarm was blaring in the middle of the night.
I would never challenge a burglar, that would be a really stupid thing to do.
By the time you had woken up, put the light on dialed the number waited for other party to pick up, explained the situation, had them put some clothes on, they gone to their safe to get the gun and unlock the ammo, loaded the gun and (they are policemen, so one assumes they follow the guidance on keeping firearms at home) had them come over to your place.....
I think burglars long since gone......maybe bit too noisey for them
