What happens to your student B permit if your semester is suspended?

Hi folks

Quick one: my current B permit is until 02/2023 as that is when my university is supposed to be finished,

However, I have recently decided that I would like to take 6 months off from uni and focus on getting my French B1 certificate.

So I wanted to suspend my coming last semester (starting in 1 week) and attend a Full-Time school then return to my Uni in spring 2023 to finish my last semester.

Do you think I will get into trouble with the Canton(Vaud)? or do you think as long as I show them proof that I am actually studying French at the school, they would be okay with extending my B permit for 6 more month until I graduate uni in June 2023 (postponed semester).

The button line is I hope I won't get into trouble.

Thanks folks

If the French course is at the university, I guess is all good.

Cantonal office wants to see a certificate that you're a student at the university, no more.

Hi there,

As long as you are matriculated at uni, and have a document from uni stating you are a student, there should be no problem extending your student permit.

Normally, masters degree take 1.5-2 years, however, you can still extend your studies for longer. If university sees that you still haven’t completed your full curriculum, they will automatically extend your studies for another semester. Meaning you will receive your matriculation document, once the fees are paid. Once you passed everything, including the thesis you are no longer a student, and only then you will be exmatriculated.

How it’s done in practice I am not sure, check with your uni for that. But usually there are no such problems from what I know. Good luck!

Cheers,
