What kind of cables are running in my house?

So I am on a 3 floors house.

- My modem is on floor 0.

- My office is on floor 3.

- I have an archer C7 in my office.

So I have been injecting UPC 100Mbps upstairs for 5 years now.

Now, UPC offered me a deal for 600Mbps. I get those values at level 0, but only 100Mbps at floor 3.

While debugging the issue, I concluded there is something wrong with my wall connection. Here's how I concluded this:

1. Bringing the router down and using the 2 cables CAT5e involved (UPC router -> socket in level 0, and socket -> archer 7 in level 3) to test the connection directly from UPC Modem router to Archer 7, then checking speed while connected to Archer 7. Speeds were between 300Mbps to 600Mbps.

So the only element involved in the rupture is whatever happens inside the walls, from the socket all the way up to my office.

Now...

1. I played a bit with the wall sockets when I rented this house and, for some reason, some connections were purposefully disconnected.

2. I can't understand what kind of ethernet cable is this and if I need to buy a new cable (CAT6) and attempt to pass it through the house (not even sure if it would even work).

3. I want to be fully sure the cable is the problem before I go crazy with this.

Now, by looking at the next pictures, from different rooms, I realize:

1. The color coding in the wires is strange. I'm not used to seeing these in a typical CAT5, 5e, or 6. Is there a correct and wrong way to wire this?

2. I'm aware that CAT5 limits to 5Mbps which is a big coincidence that my modem reading is exactly 100Mbps.

3. In the worst-case scenario, have you tried to pull these cables from the wall before? There is a plastic tube where the cable runs.

Are you sure you have just a cable going from downstairs to the third floor? Since you say "cables" most likely you've got a hub hidden somewhere embedded in the walls. This hub could be 100Mbps. On the other hand, yes, the quality, the length, and the layout may influence the speed negotiation. When a cable is bent sharply somewhere to fit the holes, this could impact the speed. Cat5 was made for 100Mbps only, but even if you've got "faster" cable pay attention to the quality to avoid surprises. The longer the cable the more negative influence any foreign electromagnetic disturbance have on the ethernet transmission.

Personally I would forgot about the cables, 5GHz Wi-Fi with repeaters is a simpler solution.

So in summary you rented a property and without authorization and being unqualified interfered with the wiring in the building to extend that you enabled connection which an actual professional installed and it has not worked out... and now you are thinking of pulling other cables through the walls.

You have neither permission from the landlord nor are you qualified to do such work and there is no chance that it will be certified by the authorities. Next time the build is inspected or there is a compalint, you can expect to be facing a very large bill from the landlord for the cost of having to get the building re-certified.

just connect 2 computers directly via the house ethernet and see what speeds you get.

Well, thank you for all the feedback. I just realized that the pictures didnt go through.

Problem is solved. One of the cables was off and automatically the speed was auto limited to 100mbps, or CAT5.

I drew a sketch of what I thought to be the cable shema and went for pulling cables and seeing if they would move. Then, injected the signal down and retrieve it in the second point, second floor. I got the 600mbps. Then it was a question of following the drill. Thank you all
