What on earth has happened to Manor ?

One thing I like about the Manor in Letzipark is there is one guy in the electronics section who knows his stuff and the couple of times we have bought large electrical items there, I've got good advice.

I know these days you can scan the interwebs for these things and read reviews, but I am still old fashioned enough to like seeing what I am buying before I write the cheque. It is also good to see the different models of an item next to each other. For example, if you buy a TV there is no substitute for seeing the thing switched on and working.

The other day I bought a new SatNav. I had done my research beforehand and went around InterDiscount and Fust in Letzipark. There were several models of different prices so in each case I asked the shop assistant what are the differences between the different models and why is one more expensive than the other. They didn't really know. The guy in Manor knew all the different models and knew all the legal stuff about having speed camera detection switched off etc.

Manor may not be the cheapest but I have always had good service - which is saying a lot for a large concern. It will be sad if they stop selling electronics items in all their shops. Not owning a car, it will be a pain if I have to travel out of town to buy things.

Cheers,

Nick

The selling to COOP of a failure cannot be declared as a strategic move

So do most of the stores in Lugano.

Fully agree, and they did a great sale in Icebreaker gear in Wallis during the summer. I also love their "interpretation" of Eagle creek-like packing products

Unless your strategy is to survive

Fully agree, I like the way they present the Apple stuff, I wonder how many buy the HP models always on display. It's as good or better as an Apple store for accessories. Miss it since I no longer live and work around the corner without a car.

It did NOT survive but completely disappear

Over-priced department store Manor stops selling electrics. Much cheaper electrical superstores like Media Markt and Inter-Discount continue to thrive.

So hard to figure out... I mean, what could the reasons possibly be?

I remember the Rheinbrucke well. As you say it was a great place, one of Basel's best.

If you know exactly what you are going to buy and aren't bothered about service then choose. Media Markt or Inderdiscount. For example I get printer cartridges from Interdiscount.

In Basel there also used to be Zihlmann who sold electrical stuff. Again, knowledgeable staff and a good returns policy if something did not work.

Cheers,

Nick

Hi,

if you look at what is happening with Best Buy and PCworld/Currys in the UK I think the days of Mediamarkt and Interdiscount are probably also numbered. In the end people go to stores to look at prices and the buy online. I enjoy shopping in bricks and mortar shops. I want to look at the product and try it out before buying it. I don't get that experience online.

I was speaking to a Manor employee in the electronics section in Basel and he was saying that often what happens is women going shopping in rest of Manor and their partners come upstairs and look at the electronics part of the shop.

So in the end the electronics was helping customers come into the shop. A department store should not just be about clothes.

Have fun

Martin

I think Manor should concentrate on their restaurant business...it's the best place to eat lunch in Basel by a long margin.

I like the restaurant of Manor in Zürich downtown. It is a good department store and I hope they find a good new location. Any location will get upgraded by them moving there. They are not as outdated and antiquated as OBER used to be, so that they have a fighting chance

I liked it when Manor was called Vilan in the German-speaking part of CH...

I've been to Manor in Bahnhofstrasse a few times for lunch, and I concur. It's a nice place for eating. Not overpriced, with a reasonable diversity of foodstuff to choose from, and it even has sitting places outside... on a sunny day these are really really nice!

Yes. I used to be a big fan of manor in Zürich. Its detiorated quickly and only cater to a pretty conservative element now. At least in mens clothes.

Lugano is in Ticino and Ticino is a totally different market, very much linked to northern Lombardia. So that Manor TI may be kept separate marketing wise for the time being. Things may change if Mediamarkt opens a superstore in Chiasso/TI and another super-super-store in Chiasso/CO
