My daughter chose one in Migros a couple of weeks ago which was CHF49. It didn't come with a matching pencilcase or anything (I'd never heard about that part before...) They also had some in Otto's for about the same price last week. so it is possible to spend less than CHF200!!
Seriously, Godparents have to put up with so much child support. It's not like the Godchildren ever come around to clean the windows or fetch water. Being a Godparent is such a rip off.
THIS is the reason for the preponderance of bloody LV and Gucci Tüssis thinking it normal to spend CHF1000+ on handbags while they're still teenagers. Gotta teach your children well.
Damn it this makes my blood boil. They're KIDS! Books are for writing obscene speech bubbles in and absolutely MUST have dogeared pages.
This thread reminds me that I have one at home that is no longer being used. I will be happy to sell it if anyone is interested. My daughter used it for one year. Blue color, good condition. Sammies by Samsonite. PM me if interested, I can also send you a pic. Thanks.
They will be down to about 40chf just at the end of the summer holidays - migros seem to have a voucher every year..
If you get a second hand one, count on having to replace it in the 5-6 years that your kid may be using it.
*Phew* Are we teaching our kids that they are not allowed to be the odd one out - the one person in the class without one of these Schultheke. Many of them will already be the "foreign kid"- but hey, what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.
Other points to consider when making your "investment"
- you also need a gym bag- some school bags add these to the "set" that you purchase.
The pencil-case set that comes with the school bag, in "our" school, is usually only used at home. The kids get given pencils, colour pencils, and other stuff from the school- at least in our Gemeinde.
When purchasing, remember that the bag will be used up to 5 or 6 years-
which works out at about..
5 years x 200 school days per year ./. 200 chf = 5 chf a day.
It WILL be thrown through the school yard- by your kid and others.
What your 6 year old thinks is ultra cool (hey- lets get Finn Mc Missile) s/he will NOT think is cool as an 11 year old.
You WILL see it on the floor in the kitchen most of the time, so get something that doesn't hurt your eyes.
I recall being extremely uncool for having a square bag when i showed up for class in 1st grade in Australia. My parents refused to buy a regular backpack because they had at that time forked out so much for the square bag. I suffered horrendous amounts of teasing as a result. I can only imagine that the it works the same way here in reverse....
200chf ./. 5 years x 200 school days per year = 200 ./. 1000 = 20rappens per day (or 1chf per week or 40 chf per year. )
My complaint with these bags is a. they take up too much room on coat hooks at school b. they are awkward when sitting on trams with such a huge pack on the child's back and 3. they are larger and heavier than what is needed for any small child's daily school needs. Heck! they are bigger than I need as an adult.
Can't you take it back and get your money back!!! Just cross the border have a lovely meal, buy a school bag and come back with change in your pocket. Rip Off Switzerland strikes again.
On sale - 50% off (50 chf) at Migros this week - saw in 3 of the Migros in Baden region so i am assuming it is across all Migros... just in case someone wants to get one!
This is a photo of my daughter's school backpack - the hard square swiss type! The flash is the safety reflective panels which most of them have. This backpack was chf49 from Migros but I saw them yesterday (and other designs too) at 50% off - so you don't have to spend a fortune.
As a teacher in the UK I knew so many kids with back problems as they were carrying huge 'sport' bags with all their books, sports equipment, etc, on ONE shoulder - at least those Swiss school bags carry the weight evenly on both shoulders, and the hard texture means they don't dig into the back.
Thanks Rachael, that was helpful, surprised that's it's so big and bulky, poor kids carrying all that weight!
Also I saw on the school supply list a ton of school stationary and supplies that we don't provide for in the uk, u would think pencils at least are provided!
8 of everything, folders, glue sticks, colours, erasers etc etc
Does anyone know how much it is for the complete p.e kit with tshirt shorts, pumps, trainers and bags. Is it worth buying some of these things in uk
My middle child started first grade this year. 2 years ago when her older sister started first grade, I bought her a used backpack set (including lots of extras) off eBay for 1€ so she could play along with her sister. Last spring I asked her if she wanted a new one for 1st grade or if she wanted to use the one she already has - and she picked sticking with the one she already has...so I got off lucky on that one! Not sure she is my daughter, though, going with a used one to start school with much too sensible!
we only had to provide colored pencils, glue, scissors, an eraser and one or 2 other items depending on the year. The rest they get in school. On the other hand, the 1st grade list for my daughter in Germany was L-O-N-G including paints, certain types of paint brushes, and many other items that easily came to 100€. It really just depends on your town. I guess we live in Canton St. Gallen where taxes are higher, but perhaps this is one reason why, as the town/school provides a lot of the supplies?
