What's the timeframe to move to new apartment?

We are B permit (non-EU) holders and considering buying an apartment in UR or SZ.

I know the apartment needs to be our primary residence, but I am not sure what's the time frame for the move. If we buy it March 1, do we have to move within weeks or we have a few months for the girl to finish her school year before leaving our current apartment?

Assuming you can actually buy, date of moving/transfer/payment is up to agreement between buyer and seller. Sometimes a week or two sometimes a year or two!

Unlike the UK where it's complicated by exchange of contracts, searches etc. Switzerland is relatively simple and cheap - this of course varies by canton...

I think they mean more in the sense of the new property being registered as their main residence. Not sure there’s any regulation that says after you buy you have to move within a certain period.

You don’t have to move into it immediately and a few months is a reasonable timeframe for moving. Schooling is also a pretty valid reason for delaying a move.

Some people buy a place and spend ages renovating it before moving in, some people buy to rent and never move in at all.

Depending on your permit it may become an issue if you delay too long and it is considered as a second residence which your permit status doesn’t allow for. A few months delay in moving in won’t be a problem.

The typical rental contract has 3 months notice period (in some cantons that can mean up to nine months until the rental contract ends), that alone means a few weeks more or less won't matter. Leaving your child in school for the remainder of the schoolyear sounds like a self-explanatory reason that can't be refused.

When in doubt ask your tax office, I would think that up to two years is generally Ok without particular reasons.
