What's with Swiss prices??!!

Correct, that's why they ARE cheaper.

Make a direct comparison FNAC vs. Media Markt (De/CH) and you'll quickly notice the difference. The difference isn't huge, however.

Call me a neanderthal but as long as an animal isn't cruelly tortured, hitting some at least minimal level of comfort, I couldn't give a toots about where I get my meat from. Meat prices here in CH are nothing short of scandalous, and i'd much rather pay 9CHF for two breasts of a chicken that while not happy, wasn't tortured with hot coals... than paying 16 CHF for one that sat around on down-filled cushions while being fanned by slaves and fed skinned grapes by naked concubines.

Lamb is my biggest peeve here though, 50 CHF for a modest sized joint makes me want to reach over the counter and strangle the butcher. I even heard a vicious rumour that in CH there's actually a law moderating the amount of meat content in sausages, preventing them from putting more than a certain % of fine meat in them, which may explain why they are so bloody horrible. Whether this is true or not I cannot say, as I haven't made the time to Google it enough.

I need to check out some local ethnic food stores as I hear you can get decent meat form them cheaper than the Supermarkets.

Oh yeah, if anyone ever is going to a France or German store and lives in Bern let me join the road trip. I would be able to get my Sirop de Menthe fix then.

16.- ? She must have missunderstood something, as that would be half a kilo, certainly not just 2 pieces of breast chicken.

16CHF is definately less than half a kilo, there was 350g on special offer the other day for around 12.50 CHF, reduced quite a bit.

still? i think i stopped that after 4-6 weeks.

In the UK, I get the pakistani secretary to get the meat because we take it in turns cooking lunch here and she will only eat Halal meat.

I have to say it seems cheaper and it actually tastes good.

Halal Meat:

A pray made while the anmial waits (yes likely in an abatoir); then the poor beast hung up by its legs and its throat cut while its blood pumps out over its face.

And they say its not cruel!

Just had a look in the fridge.

Genuine Swiss Chicken (Poulet) bought in COOP - 387 grammes -CHF 13,55.

Must admit the Swiss chicken tastes good though.

For what it is worth, I find the quality of Swiss meat better than the German stuff, pricey though.

Larry

PS This equates to CHF 35,00 / Kilo.

Sorry for hijacking this thread a bit too much, but look here:

35.-/kg (so 16.- is almost half a kilo) and I usually buy 2 chicken breasts for 8 CHF

I have to agree with you Richdog, meat prices are ridiculous. At migros 1 steak of 200 grams or so 14 chf!!!!

And I live in Basel so the border is 5-10 minutes away from me....I can even go walking...

Cheers!

Angela

I must say the poultry even in the supermarket has much more taste than the UK.

I bought a lovely Turkey in the Co-op a couple of years ago for Xmas dinner. I did get my friend to bring over the brussels and Xmas pudding and mince pies though.

Beside of that the meat in France is also expensive if you compare it to the Dutch prices...

Don't you like Swiss brussel sprouts Cash?

I think we will see a lot more protectionism over the next couple of years with the economy; especially USA with what I am reading about Obama and Canada and Mexico for a start.

Isn't there 300% import tariff on Rock Forte cheese in USA from France?

Lets face it, how could you compete producing milk, butter and related products in Switzerland with cows on mountain slopes compared to flat areas of France and Germany.

Farmers have to be subsidised and prices higher.

Can you imagine mountains without Swiss cows?

There are also a lot of contented bovines in Southern Germany.

I can't say i've noticed any difference taste-wise between a good quality and significantly cheaper free-range chicken from a UK Sainsburys, than a ridiculously over-priced good quality free-range chicken from CH.

Couldn't find them in Ticino at the time.

Love them with mayonaise

Seen them in the super-market since.

exactly that's my point. did the quality of this wine magically improved when he raised the price? no. so Swiss like to pay more for the same quality as in rest of Europe because they think it is better. it's not true, as it's not the price that gives the product certain quality.

P.S. in the defend of switzerland i can say, that it is probably because in switzerland everything used to be more or less fair priced, margins were really landing in the workers pocket etc. and they just got used to it. but outside of switzerland life is different, and prices are also different... and the quality does not always depends on price.

yeah, quality doesnt define itself over the price...thats real news! thx!

but honest: you can find loads of stuff that is by far better here than in other countries and the price on the tag has been put together by xyz factors which are different to/in other countries and those are quiet obvious. so thats why i say to talk that over and over again is like the myth of sisyphus: arduous and pointless. so check if you can afford it or not, go to germany (poland might be even cheaper?) for a million of bargain or support your local mom-and-pop-grocery store, butcher, migros, coop. ill go for the ignore button....

People that get upset at other people complaining might want to skip the complaints corner
