Whats your favourite restaurant in Switzerland?

Well is either you live to tell the tale or you have Green curry all over you while trying to get out of the way

For something a little pricier, I love Chanthaburi, a thai restaurant in Feldbergstrasse (kleinbasel). The outside is a bit uninviting, green with a neon sign, but the decor inside is lovely and they have a great courtyard, and fantastic food (personal favourite: crab).

Also: Bodega zum Strauss on Barfüsserplatz. Quite understated and great italian food, but it tends to get quite crowded so definetly worth reserving or going over lunch/early dinner.

Here are some of my faves:

Geneva:

La Favola. A gorgeous little (and I mean little) Italian serving the best pasta I've ever tasted anywhere. You must book though because of its size

http://www.lafavola.com/

Le Rouge et le Blanc: Nice little wine bar by the river that serves great apero food.

Lausanne:

Lausanne Moudon: delicious traditional french food, nice setting and good service: http://www.lausanne-moudon.ch/

L'indochine (amazing asian food, just outside Lausanne town, but very much worth the effort)

Au Couscous: Yummy home cooked Moroccan food and friendly, relaxed environment.

Vevey:

Le National: A trendy bar and restaurant, great food and atmosphere, nice terrace in summer and non-smoking at lunchtime.

Hostellerie de Geneve: Traditional Swiss food and pizza, friendly service and never a bad meal. Nice terrace on the market square.

Cathy's Biscuits: For a quick coffee and handmade biscuit, nothing beats Cathy's, just next to the Alimentarium on the lake promenade.

I ate there once and enjoyed the meal. The sweet was really good - creme brulee with fresh berries.

Your curry will be on the house!

I almost forgot about Obere Triemli which is on Birmensdorstr in Zurich The owner Heinri does a fabulous "Guggeli" (poulet/chicken done on the rotisserie). If you like garlic, get the one with garlic. They also have a garten for those warm summer nights. It's old style, but they don't disappoint.

Phillippe Rochet near Morges/Lausanne is great but vvvvvv pricey!!!!

The chocolate mousse at the Alpenclub is very good. Actually, Alpenclub is my second favorite restaurant in Engelberg. My favorite is Schweizerhaus which is a bit out of downtown up the valley (20 minute walk or 3 minute drive).

The Sport Center in Engelberg also prepares a pretty good pizza at a reasonable price.

In Luzern my favorite place so far is Pacifico (on Pilatusstrasse I believe). Great guacamole and excellent Bife de Lomo.

Milchsuedi in Cham (Zug canton). It's diagonally across the river from Hotel Lorze. Its verandah is just above the river and the lake park is a minute's walk away.

The Pizzochels (Donna Mengia) and Capunetti (both are pasta-based 'rolls') are the yummiest things I've eaten in CH. Go for the house specials.

Hi,

Does anyone know of any good restaurants in Luzern.

http://www.the-hotel.ch/englisch/index.htm

We have enjoyed Bam Bou (downstairs from The Hotel) and Pacifico which is a block or so away.

Baseltor in Solothurn - does wonderful antipasti

Kreuz in Solothurn (down by the Aare). Only time I've ever eaten Tofu and enjoyed it (curried Tofu with spinach maize and fried bananas). Sounds revolting but was actually best meal in a long time.

In Bern, we like

Buener (in the Breitenrain) - a bit pricey but the food and wine are great, atmosphere is very warm.

We also like Luce in the Zentrum (Italian) - wonderful food, interesting wines, great profiteroles

In Thun

Beau Rivage - wonderful Italian, lovely outdoor seating (if the weather's nice).

I think you mean the Barcarolle in Prangins.

The croix verte needs to change its menu, and get the some of the waiters to use , you know , the underarm stuff.....

But pizzas are good, if you dont get the the guy with the whiffy pits..

The Taj Mahal in Nyon does a nice lunch buffet. Although I agree none of the indian food in the area compares to Rajpoiute in ornex.

The indian place by the Lake opposite the cafe Latino was not too good at all. Both times I went there there was a massive salt overdose in the curries.

Theres a really nice place which does a buffet as well as a la carte and a nice mixture of various types of creative tasty food. Its on the lake road heading towards geneva somewhere past Coppet. Its called the Laguna (or something beachy like that) Its doesnt look like a decent restaurant judging by the big Neon palm tree but its actually very good.

Caveat the monolian bargq part is always too crowded for my tastes. I dont like standing in line to get my grub. But the rest of the buffet and the a la carte are imho quite good.

I would compare their menus to the Metropole in morges. (but somehow less quirky).

Its got a nice covered terrace for outdoor dining with a burbling fountain as well, which is nice.

The metropole in morges. Tasty and creative , quirky, very gay somehow.. I dont know if thats the right way to express it but thats how it comes across to me.

And For a good reasonably priced Italian, La Pulcinella in Rolle.

I wanted to add 4 restaurants to my list in Oberrieden, Ruschlikon, Thalwil and Zuriberg

Oberrieden : Key West - if you can get there while the weather is still warm, check it out. They have a long dock with table and chairs that stretch into the water for drinks and a docking area for boats. We had burgers and the meat was great (I'm very picky about the beef here).

Ruschlikon : Tracht - also a terrace on the lake that is on a corner so there is a fabulous view of the mountains in the distance. Food = excellent.

Thalwil : at the corner of the Bahnhofstr. is a little tiny restaurant called Weingarten . It looks like its been there forever - they have a tiny little white sign with blue lettering. Its now owned by 2 twin Hungarian brothers. They make the best Zurischnatlettes.

Zuriberg : For MIL's birthday we went to Restaurant Sonnenberg . It was a nice evening and we had a table on the terrace. The view of Zurich by night was exquisite. The food was delicious but the service was so-so considering how pricey it is. Nice though for a special occasion.

(LOL - maybe it sounds like I never cook - I do, I do - honest!)

I like Desperado's in Bern

Its the only place ive seen Mexican served at, and it isnt too bad, its just over priced.

I also like Speckt in the Breitenrain, also in Bern, not far from the ****dorf. Its a small family style place, and the food is great. We even saw the Girls Swiss National Team for Handball there... lol.

Hello everybody!

For really excellent Mexican food I can recommend you the restaurant "El Azteca" in Interlaken.

Enjoy!!!!

There are a lot that I love

Die Waid in Zurich, great view over town (I am a sucker for views), good food, big terrace, :

En Guete mitenand!!!

Unfortunately there is a dearth of good ethnic restaurants in Zurich: most are over-priced, under-spiced, toned-down-priced-up-for-the-Swiss (ever hear the joke...you know you ́ve been too long in Switzerland when you think Chinese food SHOULD be more expensive?). There are, however, a couple good ones, and they took a long time to find:

- For good Indian Food, Spice Route on Badenerstrasse, right across from the Letzipark Stadium. But you have to tell them to "make it the real way..spicey" when you order. Avoid the buffet as it is toned down for the masses. Pricey, as usual, but at least you leave feeling it was worth it.

- And but a 100 meters away, also on Badenerstrasse, Korea Pavillon: real Korean food prepared and served by Koreans (the all-you-can-eat Buffet they do twice a week is fantastic). Nice interior. Also pricey.

- Best Italian restarant: San Marco ́s on the harbour in Rapperswil oldtime. They just do it right, not like the carbon copy pizzarias that all taste the same all over Zurich. Nice outdoor seating right on the lake, prices not bad, great house wines. Avoid 10 ́Dici next door, it is a step down.

- Japanese: best is restaurant Hasenberg on the top of a hill outside of Zurich (Widen, nearer to Bremgarten) with a spectacular view, see http://www.hotel-hasenberg.ch/html/de/home/home.htm

Owned and run by Japanese...even has a Japanese Ryokan-style hotel connected to it.

The best Japanese restaurant in Zurich (believe me there are a lot of lousy ones) is Restaurant Samurai on Weststrasse. Unfortunately it is in a bad part of town, hard to find and hard to find parking. You can get spider-rolls here! (fried soft-shell crab rolls). http://www.samurai7.ch/de/

Tip to the real sushi-afficiendo: I have recently found a Japanese restaurant not far from the Main Station, next to Migros city where they actually have Uni! (sea urchin sushi, very rare to find)...also very good tempura and Udon soup...I forgot the name!

- Mexican: unfortanately none worth visiting in Zurich, although there is a good Mexican food store in Kreis 4 not far from the Bahnhof where you can buy all the ingredients.

- Thai: all expensive, unauthentic curries swimming in coconut milk. Very disappointing if you every have been to Thailand. Please inform me if you have found a good one, I ́ve given up, and refuse to pay for the usual lame curries.

- Chinese...god don ́t get me started. If you have ever been to Hong Kong, Taiwan, Shanghai, or even just San Francisco you know what I mean: Chinese food in Zurich SUX. They get away with it because most Swiss don ́t know what real Chinese food is (and prefer non-spicey versions anyway costing 15-35 francs per dish). Found some good ones in the French part, Lausanne and Montreux. The food tends to be better in the French part anyway, no matter what the type.

Anyway, a few rare pearls to be found in a city full of uninspiring overpriced restaurants. Please let me know if you have found any others!
