Why are the onions so small in Switzerland?

Me too.

What are you babbling about??

You need to know the babble of my planet to know that.

I'm going to take it that you're not happy because the onions are small, then?

I have found better sized onions from the Coop between Claraplatz and Messestadt in Basel after acting on advice. Plenty big enough onions, though I prefer bland Spanish onions for making the bulk of the paste in curries since they require bulk rather than taste but what I object to is the "Don't worry, be happy" neon sign of the bar in Barfüsserplatz, Basel, which is there for all the world to see and to me, detracts from the character of Switzerland and is a blight on their tourism industry.

RolandRB,

Could you please start a thread telling us what you DO like! I think we would all like to understand this planet you live on!

I have an Indian friend and back in the day before we were friends, he was always smiling at me and greeting me each morning, wanting to shake my hand. (We were in German class together) Every morning, I said in my head, "Oh, this again? We just went through this yesterday. "

Though I was not operating my life with his level of enthusiasm back then, I was never rude to him. I am not that way. I would go through the whole hand-shaking thing out of general politeness. Some days I got out of it by arriving late, and thought, "Whew!"

One day I was particularly grumpy about something and could not resist asking him why he was always smiling as he greeted me.

He smiled bigger and said, "Because my life is too short."

His answer whacked me on the head, and I understood that he didn't want to waste one minute of his life on bullshit like being grumpy.

People tend to be grumpy for a good, good reason - maybe something around them or inside of them needs changing!

Use the grumpiness as a catalyst for change. I did and I am now 19 kg thinner! Plus I am so proud of myself for working hard to make the changes in my life...getting what I want and being proud of my effort - it's a double gift! I am less of a grump, too! Whatever makes me grumpy I try to analyze and see how I can stop it. I don't like burdening the people around me with a shitty attitude - especially the ones I care about!

Venting is a good thing, but after a vent, you need a plan of action to try and get to the cause of whatever is making you unhappy. Figure out how you can avoid future "waste of time and energy" i.e. anger.

For example, I assume you have stopped going to the old place which sells the small onions. Or you let your standards on flavor and size drop, as you live in Switzerland and must adapt to how it is here. Or whatever your solution is.

Onions have helped me a lot by the way. All sizes! Couldn't live without 'em!!!!

I have a lot of recipes that call for shallots, nice because they are sweet and taste a little like garlic (they don't make you cry, unlike onions and boyfriends ). Very good for mild soups and sauces. I can't find them in Migros or Coop. Has anyone ever seem them here?

This is off topic, but are there no brown baking potatoes here? I miss these potatoes (if you've ever had an Iowa potato you know what

I mean) with rough skins that get all toasty and smell so good when you bake them .. once they are baked you can also cut them in half, hollow them out and broil them with cheese and bacon inside ... heaven !!

I have seen shallots in the Migros at Claraplatz in Basel.

Onions won't make you cry so long as you cut them up by slicing them with a very sharp knife that isn't too large.

Well, I made my first curry since moving here. A pork vindaloo. Most memorable. I feel I didn't get the proportion of spices quite right as to my taste it was akin to letting off a hand grenade in my mouth. Still, rather that than the usual bland Swiss/German food.

Your having a laugh RB......."aren't yer" check out your health insurance maybe your covered for therapy

Don't they keep all the decent onions for the onion fest in Bern ?

After I left it in the fridge overnight it improved. It is not a good curry but neither is it bad. I'll make it with chopped chicken next time and it should be a lot better. Where can I buy frozen chopped chicken in Basel?

Hands up who wants RolandRB renamed to Victor Meldrew ?

Just got some in Migros, Claraplatz.

It'd be a hit, I tell you

I recommend we close the onion thread if it has come down to nothing but antagonizing each other. I'm out. Sorry for trying!

end this thread please...

there are big onions and small onions in switzerland, it's just a matter of finding it somewhere... i prefer the stronger and spicier red asian ones...

Nice one Dave ... back to the thread ...

ever thought of buying your zwiebel in the marit ? They always have the best produce anyhoo ?

I might consider buying my onions in a "marit", but I have one question. What's a "marit"?

This thread made me laugh.

As for larger onions, go get them in Coop. They have a better, err, "onion selection" than Migros.

Cheers,

Edwin.
