Why are there no skyscrapers in Switzerland?

It's just as important that it is beautiful or not. Anyway, the people have decided they don't want buildings over a certain height.

Making taller uglier buildings doesn't necessarily solve the problem. Look at NYC. There are plenty of tall buildings and you still can't get decent housing without either paying a fortune or moving further out.

Perhaps, but it's hard to tell with all the smog!

(can't see the mountains)

How is it a solution?

There are houses available in Annemasse and surrounding area in Geneva.

So cities with skyscrapers don't have a housing crisis? Ever been to New York or Chicago? Plenty of homeless there. Much more than in Zürich.

So they are ugly and they don't solve the problem.

You mean the Gerkin? The Gerkin is wicked.

There are plenty of nice looking Skyscrapers. But when you put them all together you can't see the pretty ones from the ugly ones.

Finding an apartment in NYC is much much easier than in Geneva. The vacancy rates are around 0.3% in Geneva.

The London Dick Gherkin is virtually all office space so makes a scant contribution to London's housing problem.

Do skyscrapers actually house people, though?

When I think of skyscrapers they are mainly offices / shops / hotels. People are normally housed in high rise structures which in most cities are dwarfed by the commercial skyscrapers.

Are you sure it is the people who are against it? or those real estate owners do not want more supply and keep the value of their property high

Next time I see a homeless person in NYC I'll tell them from you that they aren't trying hard enough.

These sites are usually in a rather central location. So by buidling there you get direct access to an allready existing infrastructure.

BTW: These sites have to be decontaminated before you can build there.

Damn it! I thought it looked like a blue penis. And only office space? So I can't come in or come outside if I don't know anyone inside?

there are many 50 plus story residential buildings in NYC and HK. I think most new skyscraper developments in Manhatan are for residential

You mean the Bilderbergers?

Furthermore, some converted factories actually make very cool housing. Ever been to Hamburg? There are plenty of nice converted warehouses and factories there. And they're highly sought after.

Ummm, that's considered a real "hip" thing to do btw. And I would think, logically, you would know, especially in country like Switzerland, if there was any contamination it would be cleaned first.

I worked in the Puls5 building in Zurich and it's not only amazing to look at, and walk thru, it's a great re use of space. And strangely contributes to your industry is better for accomodating people, and less what the skyline looks like.

Maybe people from Europe have certain resentment against tall buildings. Never have this problem in Asia, North America or Australia

Yes but didn't you say earlier that the great financial cities of the world have a great skylines filled with skyscrapers? Skyscrapers filled with what then?

Come to Detroit, where a boom in building and commerce, was met with some rioting and everything has gone downhill since then. Most of the buildings in the Detroit skyline are not only an eyesore, but getting in the way of advancing the city forward.

Which would explain why so many tourists from those places come to see European cities.
