Why excercise may not help you lose weight

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I have to TOTALLY agree with the initial post, of 80% diet and 20% exercise. My husband has lost almost 30 pounds in the last 3 months due to simply changing his eating habits, and he rarely works out, maybe will take the bike or go for a brisk walk but that is about it. I also have dropped 15 pounds on simply changing eating habits. I can not tell you. Cut out crap! No white flour, white sugar. Eat fish, greens, veggies, roggen brot, eggs, nuts, veggie stir-fry, minus excessive oils, chicken..I feel WAY better too, emotionally and am back to my pre-baby weight..!! Yippe! Private message me for a weight loss menu for a week, if you follow it I guarantee you will shed pounds.. !! Happy healthy eating!

The amount of horse manure we get to read on EF in general but health and fitness related threads in particular is legendary.

If this is the kind of food you eat then no amount of exercise will help you

Good diet + exercise = Good health....not rocket science.

Now that is fresh grade A horse manure that I won't even bother getting into

If you say so

How about comparing full English breakfast with something healthy? Btw find a new place for your English breakfast as you seem to be getting ripped off on portion size

Really people wake the F**k up! I don't know why I even bother. Sorry continue patting each other on the back

What is a good diet?

What healthy meal would you compare to English breakfast?

Do you actually have some objective points apart from just subjective judgements.

Wise people talk because thay have something to say, Fools talk becuase they have to say something.

I think I just gained 5kg looking at that page!!! I must say that looking at food like this makes me feel a bit ill

I'll stick to my guns about eating less processed food, it seems to work for me and I eat whatever I want (mind you, I do a lot of sport). We were not built to eat white bread smeared with butter and jam, potato chips and everything under the sun battered and deep fried! No matter how much exercise you do, if you eat crap, you are still going to look and feel like crap! (unless of course you are blessed with great genes). My rule of thumb: if you look at the food and can tell what the raw ingredients are, it won't confuse your bod too much. Exception: deep fried Mars bars

Would my own health and lifestyle be objective enough? Oh! wait I am vegetarian so don't count as my skin must be sagging according to objective Dervaish LOL

Were did you get that quote from? Go easy or you are gonna run out of them

As you previously pointed out my upbringing must have been bad. Anyway judging by some of the smart objective posts here I prefer to be a subjective fool

If you can Google quotes then I am sure you can Google the above info too

If this fried cr@p looks healthy to you then more power to you.

IMHO it is better to stop looking at the scale all the time, and instead look at the mirror and start to assess your body composition in terms of muscle and fat.

Simply basing your progress on "weight" isn't really the best way to go about things unless you are trying to make a certain weight class for a fight or any other sport with weight classes.

Simple things such as holding water (due to excessive salt consumption) can add numbers to your weight. So can having irregular bowel movements. Also, as already mentioned above, muscle tissue is heavier than fat.

That being said, if the goal is to be healthier and more functional, the best way to go about it would be to add muscle tissue and lose some bodyfat.

I am not going to get into some numbers % game on which is more important, but rather I will say proper nutrition and exercise work together in a synergistic manner.

On the exercise end of things, most balanced results can be achieved with a combination of cardiovascular exercise and resistance training.

For maximum fat loss, the best time to perform cardio (such as jogging, brisk walking, hiking, stair climbing, aerobics, swimming, ect ect ect) is shortly upon waking on an EMPTY STOMACH. This will encourage the body to utilize it's own storage (bodyfat) as a choice of fuel. (if you just loaded up on toast and juice before running, you've simply provided fuel to be burned) The other benefit of early cardio is that you will give your metabolic rate a kickstart very early in the day. This will make your "engine" burn hotter, longer into the day.

As for resistance training, it does not necessarily have to be weight lifting. There are plenty of bodyweight only movements like squats, dips and pushups that will suffice for some people's goals. The added muscle obtained from these movements utilize more calories just to simply sustain themselves.

With regards to eating habits to encourage fat loss and muscle gain, it is best to consume several small meals throughout the day. (approximately 5 - 7 smaller meals) The meals should focus on protein (eggs, fish, lean beef, chicken, milk, and in some cases protein powder) green vegetables, and healthy fat. (such as extra virgin olive oil, almonds, or fish oil) WHOLE GRAIN STARCHES (oatmeal, whole grain pasta, brown rice, etc) can be added according to the person's needs. Someone trying to gain alot of muscular bodyweight (like a bodybuilder) would need substantially more, whereas someone who is obese would be best to cut these startches right out until sufficient fat is lost) The key is to be eating every 2 - 3 hours. If you wait much more than 3 hours, the metabolism starts to slow down.

The worst thing one could do for fat loss, and it is a pattern you see very often, is the following: Guy wakes up, rushes around and just eats a muffin and some juice at about 7 am... He doesn't touch another food until 12:00 (by this time his metabolism is screaming for food) when he eats a sandwich on white bread washed down with a Coke. Since his metabolism was already slowed, it is going to store even more of this "meal" as fat. The simple sugars and refined carbs in the white bread are also going to spike his insulin levels resulting in poor energy, fatigue, and even more fat gain. (Insulin is a whole other topic) Then he eats when he gets home from work at 6:30 pm. He has a huge meal at this time. You can already see the yo-yo effect this has on the body.

I hope this post was helpful to someone. It is just based on my own experiences over the past 15 years reading up on nutrition, and my own personal experiences as a recreational athlete.

At my age the mirrors are covered over!

It can be if you offer yourself as a specimen, who knows you might be a crosseyed baboon, sitting in some ghetto hut, posting on the forum via pirated internet connection.

For that I can equally say, I know people who can eat all the junk and unhealthy lifestyle and still stay lean and fit

I didnt get my eduction from "Wikipedia and Google" so by the time I am supposed to run out of them, there will be plenty more.

People inside the mental asylum often think its the world outside thats crazy

If I can and want to google, who asked you to REPLY ?!

Maybe you got your head stuck so far up your own a$$ that you can actually chew your food twice

I see your English Breakfast and raise you one (American) Southern Breakfast: ( Here is the recipe if you desire )

Now, neither of those breakfasts would necessarily be considered to be particularly "healthy" simply due to the amount of cholesterol and "bad" fats involved.

HOWEVER

That sort of breakfast is much better for someone who has sugar issues and NO cholesterol / blood pressure issues than a "healthy" protein shake with a "healthy" muffin.

Ahhh, what I wouldn't do for a good "down home" Southern style meal right about now. Not that I need it for my body's health but it sure would help my mental well being these days. Just one meal though, maybe once a month.

Fried chicken, baked macaroni and cheese, green beans seasoned with fat-back and black pepper, corn bread, maybe even some collard greens like the gals I worked with in Savannah used to make. Of course, the finisher would be a nice slice of chocolate cake... mmmm. **food coma**

Ok, daydreaming about delicious food aside...

I realize it isn't your job to keep folks who have weight issues encouraged but gawd all-mighty you seriously need to shut the heck up with your discouraging opinions as isn't your job to discourage people either.

Some of ya'll remind me of the idiot frat boys who snicker at everyone who comes into the gym or exercise area because they need to get things started and look like it rather than looking like some body perfect model.

Grow up already.

ahhh some people are just cranky eh?

...Don't forget the buttermilk biscuits and sausage gravy! This is definitely 'soul-food' Ok for once in awhile in my books!

Oh, stooooop, you're making me homesick! Give me biscuits and hobo gravy, and you can keep the bacon and eggs...

This is my personal favourite: Arroz con pollo hmmmmm

I dont see anything wrong with either of those breakfasts, English or Southern American.

Its all about ingredients and cooking. If you cook all that at home, sausages, mushrooms, fried potatoes and beans... what can be wrong with it ?!!

Though excess of anything is bad, and we know that.

Nothing wrong with fried chicken or a burger, only when the ingredients are processed or eaten from a unhygienic restaurant.

Mind you definition of healthy diet also varies from climates one live in. Butter and cholestrol might give you clogged veins in cold climates, but are necessary in hot regions to preserve moisture, as body looses a lot via prespiration. Eskimos eat fat of animals to keep their bodies warm.

Also some amount of fat is needed for your brain to function properly (I read somewhere, please correct if wrong).

Right and I am stupid. How about not eating either Well if some continue they will have cholesterol and BP issues too. Why are you comparing unhealthy food with more unhealthy food? I really don't get it.

Healthy Protein shake? Healthy muffin? Nothing healthy about those protein shakes or those so called healthy muffins

It's not your job to tell me to shut up either. If me stating facts is discouraging then so be it. Richdog summed up your attitude perfectly in his earlier post.

You making way too many assumptions. If that makes you feel better than good for you.

I think, for this week especially, I shall endeavor to step away from threads that start heading in the direction this one feels to be going in...

Why oh why do some of ya'll feel such need to come in and spout your perfection at folks?

It isn't like those of us who struggle with weight (be it over- or under- ) haven't heard this stuff over and over and over again from folks we have more reason to respect and listen to than some loud mouth on an internet forum.

There IS a problem with folks getting and staying motivated enough to do exercise because it is no longer a part of our daily lives to simply be active. As many others have said, our lives have become too sedentary.

It really doesn't matter WHAT you eat if you're going to sit on your tuckus all day at work only to sit on your tuckus in the car on the way home and then sit on your tuckus all evening while watching TV / playing computer games.

Since that is the lifestyle, the "wealthy" or the incredibly motivated are the "only" ones who are getting formal exercise, the average working stiff has no time and less motivation.

Soooo... we need to go back to finding fun things to do that make us move (exercise) that doesn't feel like a chore so that we don't feel the need for a reward. THAT IS ALL I STARTED OUT TRYING TO SAY.

If you can get your exercise and eat healthy without it being a hassle, goodie for you. It simply does not work (in the long run) that way for a good many other people because their lifestyle does not allow for it for whatever reason.

Now, go run along and bring me some Midol , a hot water bottle, and a huge bar of really good chocolate and everything will be fine.

Food can be addictive, as addictive as smoking/alcohol/drugs or even gambling...you name it. The difficult thing is that you still need it to survive. Those of us who have been overweight since being children will always have to struggle, even after acquiring a healthy weight.

What I ask is: would you tell a drug addict to quit and get real? Probably, but it is not realistic. The same thing applies to food. I am not saying one should just accept it, but for the love of pete, have some respect for us and show some tolerance.

Angela...

Can you cook that stuff? I do not know the recipes for that but it sooo reminds me of spending time with my Puerto Rican friend and her family in Orlando.
