Winter tires: Pirelli vs Dunlop

Rather than use all those fancy numbers, let's call 245/35R19 "Apples" and 225/45R17 "Oranges". Now what are you trying to do exactly?

DodgyKen had some big apples and medium oranges, and he liked the apples better.

If you don't understand the difference between apples and oranges, the answer will be lost on you.

Let me think - ummm - I have had 2 BMWs that have used relatively large winter tyres - one of which is good - one which is bad. The good one was wider and of a lower profile - which is counter intuitive.

Maybe the OP should rely on the 16" winter tyre reviews posted earlier? Where most aren't available in his size!

There are a lot of exotics running around in Zurich, and in the winter most I've seen run Sottozeros. If you're looking for a performance tyre, I don't know if the Dunlops will be better, but you will definitely NOT get disappointed from the Pirelli set.

Yep I made my mind, I will be getting the Pirelli Sottozeros together with my preferred rim set: ask price from BMW in CH 8100.-Sfr, ask price in DE (without MwSt) 3500.-EUR. I checked reifendirekt (very good to know about it btw) and I'm still better off crossing the border.

You can't get the rims used off ebay? With that amount of money, you could get really awesome custom HRE wheels, or go nuts in any kind of way. OEM accessories are way overpriced when bought from the dealership.

You're righty. I have been looking into that but all in all the official DE offer is better. These rims in ebay DE cost above 1800EUR many of them used/refurbished or coming from "risky sellers". The official BMW DE offer I got sells them for 2439.-EUR minus MwSt makes 2049.28 EUR so not that far off whereas via ebay I got the risks (scratches etc) plus shipping plus the customs easily goes beyond the official price, most of the ebay offers also come often with used summer tires which I don't need e.g.

Actually one of them looks perfect but the seller won't ship to CH. I have been thinking how I can get around that by having him ship somewhere south DE and I could go pick it up. Any ideas? but you see I could put some energy into saving a few hundred and can easily get into a fake sell or whatever and lose more.

open an account here or some similar place, you get charged a relatively small amount for them to be received. I use the service pretty regularly and have seen tires and rims in their on a number of occasions.
