Whilst I've never made the mistake myself, I do recall (and a quick search gave the following I guess informative article: https://wrongfuel-angel.co.uk/diesel...o-diesel-tank/ ) that a petrol nozzle can fit in a diesel, but not necessarily the other way around. May depend on the car, perhaps some with a petrol fuel input can come with a larger diameter opening, thus making it possible to accidentally place a diesel nozzle inside.
I do know a few that had to get their tanks drained. As long as one drove very little, serious harm can be avoid once the mistake was discovered. Still I can imagine it being a bummer, likely not that cheap either due to the type of liquids we're speaking about. I can only imagine.
Petrol nozzle is smaller diameter than diesel.
"In accordance with the standard EN 13012 the diameters of fuel nozzles at all gas stations are the same. The narrower petrol fuel nozzle has a standard diameter of 21mm. The diesel fuel nozzle is wider with the diameter of 25mm."

That makes me feel old. When I was young, we mixed some petrol with the diesel in winter, so it wouldn't turn into jelly, when it was cold.
Looks like that "knowledge" is somewhat outdated by now.
