But Swiss nationality, unlike the C, means that you can leave for an extended time and then come back whenever you want. Also, as things stand currently, it also gives you freedom to live throughout the EU/EEA.

Yes, they have made it more complicated and also more expensive, since my days. It took me a long time too. I would not sweat so much about how long it takes them and simply carry on with your life. they will do what they need to do - follow process and come back to you. There is no need to follow up with them. That they gave you the confirmation letter → it’s on them now, and the letter is an acknowledgement of this, also.
But let me tell you that the CH passport is worth 10x it’s weight in gold, even in current market gold prices, in terms of the rights and services you have access to as a CH citizen.
Think of it as Versicherung (also pun intended 
- it’s not for now or what you forsee; it’s about someone holding the umbrella rock solid over you in a blizzard and also the freedom and ‘respect’ globally.
Of course, the choice is yours alone )

Update:
The Swiss representation’s verification officer visited my place of birth and contacted the relevant authorities. The verification was completed successfully, and the officer has submitted the documents to the Swiss authorities. From this point, how long does the Zurich Zivilstandsamt typically take to process the case? Should I expect an additional 2–3 months?
Did they specifically say that your documents need verification? Didn’t you submit those documents when you arrived here?
Also another question. Those documents weren’t verified when you arrived to Switzerland?
How many times are documents verified by the embassy?

Hi, maybe I am too late. I just came across with the invoice the past weekend when organizing files: it was 150 chf for me.
Even if you submitted them, they do not enter your data in the register until you marry or have a baby in Switzerland.
Are you a non-EU citizen? Were you only asked to pay 150 CHF, or did you also have to make an advance payment?

And I suspect this person is trying Social Engieering to fish personal information. It’s a newly created account and his messages screams of scam.

Typical modus operandi of a scammer trying social engineering tactics to build trust and then get personal information… Then it moves to phone calls, emails etc… Pig butchering
Some people have a lot of free time to do this kinds of stuff, find a hobby or get a job and quit stalking others on the internet, more simply put, get a life.. heh
