Zurich bar/restaurant reviews - Niederdorf

I guess that the Johanniter is not the hottest of places, but they have Paulaner Salvator on tap (or did the last time I went). I was really surprised to run across it, as it is not something that you typically find.

Andorra is the only place I've seen with Maredsous on tap.

Trecini (Tre Cini?)

Reasonable to good food for lower price than usual...

Whatever happened to the Wurst Grill (in the world) ?

The Rheinfelder Bierhalle vis à vis the Bierhalle Wolf features no scary music groups but down to earth-cuisine. Big pieces of meat (called "Jumbo"-something), Spaghetti, Röschti, French Fries. Salads too, of course. The guests are from the underclass, too. A critic once wrote about the Rheinfelder: "If you've never been there, you miss some good food - if you go there often, you're probably an alcoholic."

Oh, didn't know that. And I wasn't upstairs either... The drinks are okay. Great for all the ladies who can't get enough fruit juice in theirs, I suppose.

I've been there once with a Spanish friend. He ordered a (half?) litre of calimocho which, contrary to the Wikipedia article, was served in a special pitcher with a very small hole. The drinker proves to his mates that he's still sober by guiding the stream shooting out of the the pitcher in his outstretched hand at his mouth...

The antipasti looked good but I didn't try them.

Yes the Santa Lucia pizzerias are good but I had a bad experience in this particular one. My salad came five minutes after my friend's pizza and my pizza was scorched. It required much patience to get a waiter. I would like to say that the restaurant was jam-packed then, but about a third of the chairs were unoccupied. I only went there once, last year.

Are you sure you are not confusing Le Barrique with Bodega ?

Barrique is more cheese'n' wine...

Oops, if that's so, the same goes for my review - I mean a Spanish restaurant that has an antipasti counter to right behind the entrance, on the right.

Bodega is the one that has a knee-high door that is shut when its closed, and has bottles of Magno and stuff in the windows.

Barrique is on a corner further in the Bellevue direction near (spit) Zic Zac.

They used to have some quaint bottle-glass windows and felt the need to be trendy and put in some huge sheets ones and rosewood formica tables with stools. The wine list is certainly good there though...

You mean the jumbo cordon bleu? It's supposed to be the biggest and best of its kind in Zürich from what I've read, but I've yet to go. It is next to the Johanniter, both of which are bit more appealing than Bierhalle Wolf, at least from my perspective.

I think that Wolf occasionally tacks on a surcharge when there is live music. The one and only time that we went there we found such a note on our table and left before ordering, which wasn't hard to do as no server showed up during our first 10 minutes there, although the place was half empty.

The prices also increase as the day progresses. At lunch a Stange (0.3 cl) of lager is 3.90 CHF according to their website, during the evening [or if there is music at lunch] it jumps to 6.30 CHF. I don't know about you, but I would not consider 6.30 CHF to be reasonable. A Stange of Weissbier goes from 4.90 CHF to 7.30 CHF! This places make Oliver Twists look cheap. Take the five minute walk over there and get a pint of Erdinger for 8.70 instead (which is still expensive in and of itself).

The original poster had mentioned how one can buy a Maß (1 liter) there. How about these prices? The lager goes from 10.90 CHF at midday (very reasonable) up to 17.50 CHF in the evening (ouch).

Try the Bierhalle Falkan for Cordon Bleu. It near Löwenplatz somewhere (never been there sober) Its huge. Diners call passers-by in off the street and say : "Come and look at the size of my cordon bleu, ain't she a beaut ?"

dave

The wine is very good there!

They also do tapas which haven't got around to sampling yet but it does look nice if that helps..... am usually too busy drinking the yummy red wine!

Is this it?

Yeah, I've been squinting at it, to simulate fuzzy vision and that's certainly it.

Is Bodega the place with the big Absinthe display in its window?

Yes, that's it. If you've never been there, it's a 'must' for cordon bleu fans. They used to have a huge papier-mache (sp?) condon bleu hanging on the ceiling. It was a trip, but seems to be gone now. I don't really care for that kind of 'progress'. I've never gone for the Riesen-cordon-bleu (tips in about 400g!), the Mini-Maxi does just fine (about 250g?).

Rheinfelder Bierhalle also has an excellent cordon bleu. Neither place will steer you wrong.

The Spanish place you guys are talking about with the half-door is across from Andorra and is called Bodega Espanol (sorry, no tilde's on my laptop). Very good food. Can be very crowded. Definitely book ahead unless there's only 2 of you.

Tried the tapas on Sat evening and have to say the food was very nice, the copious amounts of wine we got through was also good!

We didn't have a reservation and we only waited 5 mins for a table however there were just 2 of us and it was pretty busy so would advise booking.

Would def recommend it!

Food is in general ok, but there is certainly place for improvement in that tortilla [ spanish omelette ].

Another good find - Restaurant Dialog, on Munstergasse at the southern end of the Niederdorf. Great Italian food, excellent wine, good service. Takeaway pizzas too.

I'm headed to Hooters on Wednesday, in honor of Independence Day. I'll let y'all know how the burgers are. If that matters.

Zic-Zac's burgers are good and they also make bacon sandwiches!

Are we talking a real bacon sarnie, or bit of speck between two slices of halbweisss?

My girlfriend and I went to Hooters a couple of weeks ago, for a drink before the Macy Gray concert. I've never been to a Hooters bar before so I've got nothing to compare it with. It's an ok bar - we didn't try the food. They do sell a local bottled beer but I didn't recognise the brand - I suspect it's a house brew. The place also had all its windows wide open - it didn't (at least at that stage) have air conditioning for those hot days - it's an issue when there's a kitchen/grill and 50 people crammed into a small space.

This should really go on the Kreis 4/Langstrasse review...
