Zurich Canton - Work Permit Rejected

Thanks guys, lot of light on the topic.

So my understanding now is that for a Non EU resident on a B or L permit, tied to any employer, one needs the approval in writing from arbeitsamt for the change of employer or the new work permit. Once you have it then there is no possibility of rejection or deportation in a normal situation.

If that is true then it is the way to go for changing the employer. Any endorsement to the interpretation??

I agree.

One question remains: When working and living in differnet cantons, do you have to go through the Arbeitsamt of the current (residence) canton or the canton of employer ?

This might be relevant to the original post as well (VD vs CH).

The current canton will not be able to help you if you are changing cantons as it falls under the quota of the receiving canton ie new one.

If you work and live in different cantons you will need to tread extremely carefully as in all probability the "new" canton will be rather hostile to the idea of you coming and working in their territory but being taxed in another especially under a job switch.

Yes this is correct but I see people who have done it and are doing it e.g. a a friend just moved to Zurich while continuing to work in Zug. One has to be careful as you said.

As for quotas, it seems that the permit holder is no holder subject to quotas if he or she has a current B permit in one canton...no idea if this holds.

One question to the ongoing discussion:

What options are open for a non-EU national to stay/work in Switzerland after the 2-year L permit has expired?

You need to get the employer to apply for a B permit. Simple really. Whether the authorities give you it is another matter of course... If the permit has already expired then I fear it is all too late as they will be coming looking for you very soon.
