Zurich Mexican Food

There is a new restaurant in Basel... La Piratita, that serves "taqueria" food. Very good and very authentic.... Mexican owners, cook and clientele. They told me they will soon install "Pastor" equipment, brought from Mexico, not an adapted Kebab machine.

I have to say this is the most authentic mexican food I've had in Europe so far. Granted, I stopped trying years ago because I was always very disappointed. And when i say Mexican, I don't mean Tex-Mex or Santa Fe.

Here's their facebook page

https://www.facebook.com/LaPiratitaCH

Yes why would you say an apple for an orange?

Because outside mexico and latin america, many people know only tex mex and santa fe but call it mexican, so it's helpful to make the distinction.

Well, I'll be making corn (and also maybe flour) tortillas tomorrow (still have about 18kg of masa harina lying around).

Now need to figure out what to put in them.

Helpful possibly yes, but talking as if all of Mexico had the same cooking, ignoring that it is Mexicans in Texas who built up what became TexMex, and also ignoring that Mexican - Texans on the Rio Grande Valley are not in the TexMex cusine but celebrating quite genuine Mexican cuisine and that Mexicans in some restaurants in Atlanta Georgia proudly declare to be in genuine Mexican cusine

TexMex cuisine was developed by the Mexicans who stayed in Texas after the Battle on the San Jacinto in the Republic of Texas and later the State of Texas, EXACTLY IN ORDER to maintain Mexican culture. That they in between 1836 and now DID compromises is obvious but most understandable. And to talk as if the result was junk simply is not acceptable

As late as in 1976 the folks of Mexican ethnic origin in Texas were still despised but in the meantime became accepted. Not least as the "Anglo-Texans" in exactly this timespan re-found THEIR own traditional cuisine and the cuisine of the German ethnics in the Lone Star State plus the Cajun cuisine from Southern Louisiane

Over back to Switzerland, much of what is around here is NEITHER Mexico-Mexican cusine nor TexMex but in reality Kos-Mex cuisine. In THEIR defence however it is to be mentioned that for example those Kosovari in the Löwen in Glattbrugg celebrate really good "Mexican" cuisine, even if not "genuine". Amazingly, the Kosovari here have a far better understanding for Mexican cuisine than Swiss-Swiss "experts" have

So that this then will be LUGAMEX cuisine

I didn't say junk.... That's your own bias. It's simply expressing preference. Right or wrong, these are now 2 distinct cuisines, and in my opinion mexican is much superior to tex mex, no disrespect to proud heritage.

We went back to El Luchador last night and tried out a few more menu items.

Do yourself a favor and order the "Super Porky" torta.

Then pile on the extra bits they serve with it and then stuff in face.

magic, magic, magic.

Hi!

You can go to El Luchador, it is quite good, not the best but it is the one that ive liked so far... I am mexican

Whilst flying through some of the answers and replies for your question, I've noticed the "Tex-Mex is not *real* Mexican Food"-opinion, and - whatever you might think of it - I have a Tex-Mex restaurant just around the corner from my street.

It's actually even called "Tex-Mex", so don't you ever come telling!!!

It's in K9, right opposite the Letzigrund Tram Station and on the Badenerstrasse.

Their website is right here: http://www.texmex4you.ch/

I'm just always and still baffled at how a restaurant can afford to remain closed........on a SUNDAY! Wo0t!?

Anyway, I thought it was very tasty food despite the rather small portions... a bit pricey, but then again, Mexican Cuisine is not the most standard one in this country (yet), and as long as that's the case, it will remain pricey too. Best is still to get the recipes and items you need to prepare those lovely dishes yourself...

Hope that helps!

Buen Provecho!

It's not real Mexican food because it is named something other then Mexican food. Tex Mex is an actual kind of cuisine. It not an opinion based, today we call it one thing, tomorrow we call it another.

You want me to say you are calling Rösti, Hash Browns because of a matter of an opinion?

do you mean that the maxicon food is not spicy?

My preferred are:

EL Luchador (delicious tacos al pastor!!)

Primo Tacos (very good Taco stand!)

Bump for Tres Kilos in Seefeld area of Zurich!

I haven't been there in a long time, but I don't remember it being especially good, and Mexicans I know here in ZH say it's not good at all. I've never heard a Latin American person praise that place.

Have you tried Luna Mexicana?

http://www.lunamexicana.ch/

It's pretty close to the real thing, especially in Switzerland.

Otherwise, yeah, get to El Maiz and be prepared to cook yourself.

I'm curious to know if anyone has tried La Taqueria in Alstetten? Even though they claim to be authentic Mexican to me, their tacos taste more Californian, which I guess it close. Right?

Have you been to Mexico? To more than one region? To you know when it is authentic and when it is not?

Damn! Feisty!

I've been to Mexico several times and visited many regions, lived in Houston, TX for six years and had many of my Mexican friends make authentic food for me (Yum!) and been to southern California many times as well.

HOWEVER, I have never been to Baja California. Maybe their tacos are a take on that region? Or maybe another region I haven't been to. I don't know. I just know they taste more like California tacos to me.

I've been to LT a couple of times and enjoyed it. Tastes good, portions are generous and doesn't break the bank. It's always busy so I guess others agree. Before a purist decides to smack me with a sombrero, I will clarify that I have no idea on the authenticity of their food..
