I meant to quote the post above. But I'll just keep my comment here as I agree with you. Just want to add this:
You have to be careful not to eat too FEW calories. Your body will think it's starving. I read about this method were you trick your body by eating say 1700 calories per day for 6 days then on the 7th day you eat those extra 600 calories. So, 2300 calories one day of the week.
I've also heard that if you plateau a change in diet is good too. So, maybe do low carb for two weeks, or if you are doing low carb do high carb while staying on your calories intake.
Also changing your exercise. The point is that the body gets used to a routine and that is not good for losing weight.
(Says the girl who should take her own advice and the advice on this thread!! lol. Good luck!)
miniMia...I think you are right about changing the routine.
I mean..just last week..I had a hell of a lot of lifting, moving etc to. I think I lost like 2 lbs just doing that "non routine" activity and eating like I was before. My legs are a bit trimmer oddly...though I ride the bicycle and a lot uphill...it did wonders for a mini-breakthrough.
But they say find a sport you can do all your life..that you like doing. My boyfriend jogs. UFFFF..."those people". He really really likes doing it. So in order that we do sports together..I figured out I could ride the bicycle with him (naturally riding circles around him to keep moving...hehehe).
Sometimes I inline skate but the roads are not so smooth and it makes me not like doing that.
Mainly my activity is riding the bike...even in gym...I sit on the bicycle thing like 45min. Does nothing.
I guess I will try to create more "boost" moments to get beyond the plateau.
When the opportunity comes...like a long Hike in the mountains....or a rare smooth location where I can inline skate for an hour or so.
It doesnt encourage me to be in the gym 2times a week plus 1-2 days outside exercise with no results over 4months....AND it is expensive for the gym membership!!!!
I propose this. If you are a certain BMI...you should have discount gym membership...maybe from the insurance companies. I think in the UK there is a provider who charge less premium IF you go to the gym....also think they deduct the fee?
Bicycling, hiking, skating... sounds like mostly activities that involve muscle burn in the legs, unless you're using some sort of hand weights (mini barbells or wrist weights) to help work arms / upper body while you're moving.
Maybe "instead" of gym membership, try a season of pool membership for some swimming to get more of a whole body burn. This might help get you off the plateau.
Also, I know some of the walking areas here in Basel have exercise stations with steps and bars and such to get a bit going on in other areas besides the legs... perhaps there is something in your area as well?
Actually, check with your insurance company and see if they offer this. I've been thinking to do some checking into that myself as well. I think subsidized pool and / or gym membership would be fantastic.
In answer to your initial question, there was a very interesting study done on rats a little while ago:
Two groups of rats were fed exactly the same amount of food in the form of pellets. One group had its pellets ground up and softened with water, and the rats in this group quickly became obese, while their buddies eating the hard, crunchy pellets maintained a healthy weight. The rats were able to extract many more calories from the ground-up, refined food.
The calorie content of a food is not as critical as the amount of calories your body can extract from it. I have achieved a lot of weight-loss success by substituting smoked / cured / raw meat for cooked meat. Raw / cured meat is much harder to digest than cooked meat, but you still get the satiation effects of eating meat.
Regarding your cycling efforts, exercise alone is great for weight maintenance, body sculpting and general health, but pretty useless for weight loss. I know a semi-professional cyclist who trained for six months for an extreme cycling marathon, but only lost 4 kg in weight. It does help if you use a heart monitor to make sure you are working hard enough. Not many people working out in gyms really get to the sweat-soaked, purple faced, heaving for breath level of exertion required to really make a difference.
Velofellow...if EVER you see me at a gym with a purple face...darling...call the paramedics!!!
I am chocolate luvvy...and if you see red...run!!!
But I do get your point...hehehe.
My boyfriend and are going to the gym tonight.
Now I am trying to eat 6 smaller meals (and not cake:-).
I do need to get more fibre in my diet....and do like Oatmeal in the morning....
..what do I do the rest of the day... ?
Fruits never filled me up. Apples do in a way...but my tongue still could have a small piece of real carbs to close the deal...hahaha!
Having a "lifestyle" of eating does take a while...a long while I think.
Can you imagine how worse it would be if I ate chocolates (which I cant stand the consistency) and cakes...I dont like soft things...prefer something I can put my teeth in and BITE.
I do stay away from chocolates with nuts...!!!
I think for me....I need a low carb diet...BUT I have bad digestion and was told not to eat so much protein.
I cant win for losing....you do have to consider your other health issues. I had gastritus a few times.
So...that being said...I should eat lots of "soft" foods...but they tend to be carbs!!!
AAAAhhhhhh. I see vicious cycles...they ́re everywhere (Sixth Sense re-quote).
