75% contract

Hey!

I recieved my contract for a Postdoc at the ETH, and my salary is less than I expected and the reason is that I am at a 75%. What that means exactly? Do I have to work less hours? I hope so, if not is not fare to work full time and get much less money. Do you know about this??

Thank you

75% means you will only work around 3.5 days a week (someone please correct me if I'm wrong). 100% means you have to work 5 days a week. Is it not written in your contract how many hours you have to work per week?

hi

well, I would understand that it would mean you work 3/4 of the time, so if the normal working week is 42H you would work 31.5 hours a week on average, does this help?

I am a post doc at the ETH and am only on 60%. I still am contracted to do 40+ hours a week, I just get paid 60% of the going rate. This is common at the ETH. Perosnally, I don't think it's fair, but i'm here to gain experience working at a world renowned institution. There are a few threads on this on the forum (perhaps search "post doc salary using" the serach function).

I'm a postdoc also, though at UZH, and my contract is for 72%. Unfortunately this doesn't mean anymore free time - it's just the way it works on their end.

Remember also that a postdoctoral stay here is treated as Ausbildung (i.e. you're still in training) so in many disciplines it's still the normal to earn less than 100%.

Agree with all the above. I am a post dc at ETH, 75% means: 75% of the wage, 100% of your time.

I guess just be happy in the knowledge they pay more than most institutes.... inculding UZH!

Of course this 75% should increase after you have spent more time here.

.....Of course I am spending my afternoon on EF so they don't work you too hard

Hi

With normal contracts the working hours should be stated.

But, for "students" and "Apprentices" there is a loop hole where the hours do not need to be stated (except for some collective agreements in many industries).

I think there also are exceptions for home working and if you are provided accommodation.

I will check my Swiss code of Obligations to confirm this.
