8 March 2026 vote/votations/Volksabstimmungen

This one wil be definitely accepted and Klimafonds will be rejected. The intrigue is SRG initiative.

Even if OH and I would pay less Swiss tax as individuals I expect any savings in taxes will be eaten up, and then some, by my accountants’ bills.

Reconciling individual taxation on the Swiss side with joint taxation on the US side could end up costing a pretty penny.

(I can’t vote, only grumble, so my opinion doesn’t matter.)

Giving this a bump since the votation is on Sunday. It would be nice if couples could choose to file jointly or separately.

@Meloncollie I don’t think you have to file jointly in the USA even if you’re both citizens. Unless this was a choice made a long time ago that you can’t reverse? I file separately, as my OH is not a citizen or green card holder and therefore doesn’t need to file.

Yes, you can choose between married, filing jointly or married, filing separately in the US tax system. And going back and forth is possible, albeit with some complications.

Starting the year we married (back when dinosaurs roamed the earth) we’ve always filed our US taxes jointly, as the tax rate and deductions allowed when filing jointly are substantially more beneficial to our situation.

I don’t want to switch our US tax status to married, filing separately - and pay even more to Uncle Sam - simply to make reconcilation with our Swiss tax return easier. On the other hand, I expect that US tax preparers in Switzerland will probably increase fees significantly due to added complications if the Swiss system changes. And if filing separately, we’d of course see double the fees.

Aarrrrrgggghhh!

We already pay far too much to Uncle Sam, I begrudge him every penny.

Ahhhh, I have not considered this. Couples who don’t do their own tax calculations would pay twice the fees.

Or worse, twice the time. Last year it took me 14 hours to fill it out and another 4 hours to find the errors, my stock trading. This year I paid 30 bucks for a e-tax statement and it took me only a few minutes.

I don’t know if I would pay more or less, I don’t really care. But it will be more complicated, more time needed for something everybody hates.

I don’t care too much about TV. I don’t watch Swiss TV because I hate the ads. I think it should be free or they should pay us to watch that bullshit. So a clear yes.

The cash initiative seems to try to fix something that works already perfect. The Swiss Franc is the only currency that did significantly better than the Dollar since world war one. There are a few that did more or less like the Dollar, but all were tied to the Dollar. The most valued banknote that is really in use is the CHF 1’000.–. I think it would be overkill to burden the constitution with that. More important is that the SNB stays independent. So a no from me.

Now the climate fund I see dangerous, as dangerous as was the 13th AHV, because it may put in danger the debt ceiling that works perfectly. It is a good idea not to define how something will be paid, because if people find out they have to pay for it they may vote no. Anyhow, I don’t see how money can fix the mess money made. I probably would gain as I need to switch my heating system, but for the public good I vote no.

Love the word votation. It sounds so wrong (to me), but apparently it is OK in Filipino English.
Anyway I just voted. Yes single taxation. Doesn’t affect me personally but anecdottaly I know of several Swiss couple who have delayed getting married because of the tax situation.
Cash initiative - no: why?
TV; don’t watch much Swiss TV. Recently enjoyed Tschugger and Der Bestatter (Netflix with subtitles in English or German) and follow the summaries of what was discussed in Arena. In the end, a good state TV is a useful counterpoint to commercial stations. I think the problem for the SVP is that whilst they perceive the SRF to be too left, there are a number of programmes that appeal to traditional Swiss interests.
Climate fund. Voted yes but am not sure this is the best way to achieve the stated aims. It will probably not succeed so it is a mute point.

Or French

The vote isn’t just in the French part though is it so perhaps forum users should just use popular vote, or just vote as votation just sounds like a made-up word by someone from the US to make them sound cleverer than they probably are.

Really?

That’s what it says on my voting papers.

If I objected every time someone uses a German word in this forum I would wear out my fingers.

B-M. I see you changed the thread title. I don’t agree it needs to be changed, but I bow to your greater wisdom.

Should probably be votes not vote as votes is the direct translation of votations and there is more than one.

I guess context is everything or is that too nuanced for you?

At least the title wasn’t changed to Volksabstimmungen!

…or “A load of ballots”.

Very preliminary results announced for 9 Cantons. Mostly the rural German Speaking ones.

1 Money, Money, Money. Proposal No, Counter proposal Yes
2 TV tax No
3 Climate Fund No
4 Individual Taxation Yes

ZR LU SZ BS BL SG GR AG VS

All are already pretty clear, the only one that could in theory switch is Individual Taxation but for that to more to a no would be at the fringe of the statistical certainty.

Please, Romandie hasn’t begun reporting.

Neither has ZH which will be a big yes vote.

Edit - actually a few areas have there as well.

It looks like voting for Individual Taxation Yes but maybe not enough Cantons

The “200 francs is enough!” is a Swiss popular initiative rejected by people that aimed to slash the annual household radio and TV fee to CHF 200.

bummer!

On the plus side, I will still have access to broadcasting cooking show from some obscures corner - ‘how to cook cheese something’ for days and days in a row, 24 hours a day .. and also ‘how to learn Swiss yodeling’ …
