8708 Männedorf - nice area to live?

Hi,

am struggling to find a place in Zurich city so am looking further outside. Could anyone give me more info on Männedorf? I read the S7 takes about 20mins to Zurich HBF. Is there much going on in Männedorf or is it very quiet/more for families?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Mannedorf is a lovely town.

(Why has EF suddenly stopped accepting my umlauts? )

I lived in Mannedorf when we first arrived, stayed there for 5 years. Excellent train transportation to Zurich and to Rapperswil in the other direction, easy car commute into the city as well.

I was so fortunate in my neighbors - lovely people who have remained good friends. The town had a very open vibe, I always felt welcome - even though I arrived with no German at all. Several of my Swiss neighbors had themselves lived abroad, understood the challenges a foreigner faced and went out of their way to be kind.

The town has a decent infrastructure - as mentioned, good train connections, a couple of decent restaurants, a nice swimming Badi, an even nicer unofficial swimming spot by the second harbor where the dogs were welcome, a fantastic coiffeuse (my former neighbor ) the best mechanic in all of Switzerland (another neighbor ) a small Coop and Migros, a bakery... and Kino Wildeman, a little gem of an art house cinema.

And the lovely Pfannestiel hiking area.

No, there is not the nightlife one would find in the city - but you are only 20 minutes or so out, you can always go and find the bright lights - and then come back to your friendly, convivial little town.

I was very happy in Mannedorf - I'm sure you would be as well.

Good luck in the house hunt.

Thanks so much for your response - it was very helpful!!!

Anywhere from Meilen to Stäfa is good, albeit quiet for a single person, buses have good connections to any of the stations with S7 trains. Stäfa is probably your best bet if you are single as it has a lot more resturants and Swiss versions of bars (but you will need to bring your own friends!!). You are also 25 minutes closer to decent winter skiing and Pfannensteil on your doorstep is great all year round.

This was so off base in terms of reality i really wanted to step in. Either you have equity in Mannedorf or you live in an alternative reality. I am so sorrry to sound cruel but we moved to Mannedorf in 2022. It is ok. Just ok. It is definitely not a town. Nobody from outside Switzerland (majority of people on here) would call Mannedorf a town. Its residential suburb at best. It has zero restaurants. Maybe a Chinese or Pizzeria owned by spurious folk wanting to use an AG for some laundering. It has a lovely badi - agree with you there but the train stops on the Gold Coast are NOT TOWNS. I want to be clear so my fellow Brits understand. There is no centre, it is extremely quiet and unless you have kids, I would not be living here. There is no community as this poster describes. Sorry but you need to be accurate when you post to genuine requests.

You do realize you’re replying to a thread that’s old enough for the OP to have probably naturalized with Mannedorf as their Heimatsdorf by now? Back in 2011, they were just trying to find a place to live, and now you’re dropping truth bombs like they are still packing their bags and house hunting!

Not saying your insights aren’t correct, but wow, you must have a lot of free time to dig up this old thread.
Also, quick question: your warning about Mannedorf seems to be directed specifically at Brits. Should suburb-friendly folks: Americans, Aussies, Canucks and whoever else stumbles onto this thread just carry on?

Anyway, the AG(S.A.) comment had me laughing, laundering pizza money!! Hope you are surviving Goldkueste life or finding your way to livelier Beizen!
