A night in Fribourg

Hi all,

Just fancied a weekend away and realised I've never been to Fribourg. I usually just stay at an Etap. Is there anything similar there? Also I usually like visiting an English type pub. Is there anything along these lines too.

Many thanks

I went there one Sunday last year. It was closed. Seriously!! It's not a big place and there was nothing to do but walk down to the river and back. If I remember right, there's a Paddy Reilly's pub in Fribourg. Nice enough place in a quiet sort of way but wouldn't be my choice for a weekend unless you're really looking for a backwater.

Sounds ominous. I was planning this Friday. Was hoping to go somewhere for a bit of a dance too. Hmm. Will see if there's any other replies. may have to reassess

Good steaks next to Paddy's. I think Nev and I have completed the visit.

If you don't find anything in Fribourg, you could drive 17 km to Murten/Morat. We were there a few weeks ago and noticed an Irish Pub that looks good. There's also a place called The Chesery. It's a wine bar and an antique store. It's really a unique spot - rooms full of furniture and unique objects for sale, an incredible number of burning candles, and cozy tables for sampling the wine. Unfortunately, the link to The Chesery doesn't work, but here's more info about the bars and clubs in Morat. We were there on a Saturday afternoon, so I don't know how lively it is at night. The downtown area has arcades, so it's like a mini-Bern on a lake.

It is a lovely place. If in search of nightlife though my advice would be to keep going until you get to Bern.

I don't think it's that bad, I spent a fun evening there, I think the club was le Macumba but I really couldn't be sure, it wasnt far from the train station, decent sized, stayed there till 6, then a decent breakfast and wine at some restaurant nearby and back home for 9. Theres also an underground club (underground as in physically, not secret) off the square at the bottom of the big road leading down from the main quarter, it was small but pretty fun as I recall, been a while since I was there tho.

Well if it has a pub a place to eat and a club then I think I'll go for it Fancy a dance but not too much. Any hotel 125CHF types anyone?

Well, if you're looking for something a bit different, a friend told me about the Auberge aux 4 Vents in Fribourg . One of their rooms (the Bleue Room) even has a bed on rails that can slide outside. I think that one or two of their rooms might be in your price range. The inn is an old manor house.

Here's a description of the inn from myswitzerland.com :

A team of „half-crazed“ people designed each one of the eight rooms in a different style, skillfully and gaily combining latest technologies with rustic Baroque interiors.

Just a few minutes from the heart of Fribourg, this country inn charms and surprises its guests – each one of its eight rooms has been decorated in its own style with state of the art technology side by side with rustic baroque – such as the "floating bathtub" in which you find yourself (almost) bathing in the garden. The hotel restaurant has a concise yet superb menu, and the extensive gardens are ideal for a stroll.

Everything is to please the senses, such as the bathtub on rails, allowing Juliet to wash up on the balcony while Romeo takes a swim in the pool in the midst of a dream garden, which sees a great variety of people passing by in the course of the year.

Not sure about hotels, but there is a centrally-located youth hostel which is meant to be pretty good. Paddy Reilly's is my local and can get pretty busy at the weekends, depending on whether students have exams or not. There is also dancing upstairs, but usually full of kids. There's actually a band playing at Elvis et moi on the rue de Morat this Saturday, it's a friend's colleague's band and there might be a few of us there.

Plenty of decent places to eat, if you're into that kind of thing.

As for the Bern, my Bern-based mates always complain abou the lack of decent bars and prefer coming down to Paddy's for drinkies

I don't know. There's something romantic about this thread title.

" A night in Fribourg."

You mean, like "A night in Paris"?

Ouiii, c'est ça !!

I knew there was something about that phrase. Thanks PaddyG.

Well we're going for it. Won't kiss and tell though

Check out: http://ch.tilllate.com/en/all for clubs.

Hopefully not too late with my message:

I think the underground bar reids was talking about is probably Mouton Noir on Grand-Rue right before the steep steps down to quartier Auge (opens at 11pm, closes at 3 or 4am). Hang out there most weekends and it isn't too bad - it is right underneath Belvedere, a cafe/bar with a massive terrace which overlooks the old town.....and both of these are beneath a thai restaurant which has pretty good food. Nouveau Monde which is in the old train station (right next to the current train station) is not bad for a quieter drink...and you can even give some Fribourg boutique beers a try (no, I don't mean Cardinal!!!).

As for places to stay...Hotel du Falcon is a little hotel on Rue de Lausanne. Rooms are new and pretty nice...my family stayed there for 2weeks recently and had no complaints, not expensive either ( http://www.hotel-du-faucon.ch/ ), and right in the middle of town (not like 4 Vents).

Hope this helps....maybe I will see you in Fribourg!

Hey cbb, how did your trip to Fribourg go?

That's a great question! I was wondering about it as well.

I've had a few nights there and have made it out alive, so I imagine she did too.

She? Funny I was pretty certain that she was a he ...

Lol! Ok, I'll go with that. It's the avi that threw me, like you with me.
