I work in Geneva but live in France and I have just bought a car to do a charity event with.
I plan to drive the paris dakar rally in a car that only cost 200 Chf.
Sounds mad I know but should be fun.
Here is the question.
The car is swiss registered and I live in France. Is it possible for me to get swiss export plates that last about 1 month?
The idea is that when I get to the finish line the car will be auctioned off to raise money for local charities.
I don't want to go through the process of importing the car to France (which is a long, complicated and expesive) process, when the first thing I will do is drive the car to africa and leave it there.
Cool idea! Have been harbouring a desire to do the Mongol rally for some time - basically a drive from Hyde Park to Ulan Bator in a car that has an engine capacity of 1.0l or less.
Always been a bit wimpy about it, and never been organised enough to not be working for the amount of time it would take.
Anyway, good luck. Do you have a sponsorship web page? If you do, suggest you post it here and people can donate if they wish. If you don't, then I know back in the UK you can get one via. justgiving(.com I think). Guess there's something similar here.
(sorry to digress - I don't have a clue about Swiss export plates!)
Don't want to threadjack, but are any of the cars driven in the Dakar rally insured? Does the race itself provide any protection for the drivers if they injure spectators or the general population? Or are the drivers in these types of competitions expected to provide it themselves? I would think that would discourage most entrants...
Since a good part of the race takes place on public roads, I'm pretty sure there must be insurance to go with it. I remember cars and trucks sporting French registration plates.
as most of the entrants are run by vehicle manufacturers or major sponsors, yes they will be insured, as will any privateers. These guys do it as well as other adventure travel bespoke insurance.
Have you done any research into the requirements of entering an international rally ? You will require an FIA licence and the car must be prepared to FIA specs and you must have items like a satellite telephone etc. The entry fee for amateurs is CHF 5,000. The last estimate I saw for all the necessary fees and preperation was CHF 300,000 excluding the cost of the car !
Although your question is very interesting, we don't feel you have been buggered with appropriate research. Have you considered contacting the Motor Vehicles Department ?
I suspect you'll find all it takes is filling out a form, providing the previous car documents and your id, and paying the relevant fees.
We've purchased a car that was registered in canton Valais. Car is the name of my father in law. he will drive it abroad.
Today I went to Strassenverkehrsamt Zug (closest to me) to ask how to get export plates so I can go and pick up the car located in Sion. They told me they cannot give me export plates because the car was previously registered in canton Valais.
I rang Service de la Circulation Routière et de la Navigation in Sion and they also told me they cannot give me export plates. (they use to do it - but they no longer do it)
On the question - Where shall I go to get export plates? - lady told me - "Don't know"
Any advice is much appreciated.
(Edit) After ringing one more time just now;
Kanton Zug will not give export plates to non-residents
If it was me, Strassenverkehrsamt Zug will issue export plates without problem.
So the question will be can anyone who buys a car get export plates in canton Valais, and where?
But there is this clause in the application form: "An ausländische Bürger/innen mit Ausländerausweisen F, N oder S können keine Exportschilder abgegeben werden." Could also mean no export plates to people with no permit at all.
Get German Ausfuhr plates?
Last resort: Normal plates on your name. Father drives and declares import at relevant border (needs written approval, notarized, and apostilled.) Overall not more expensive than export plates. Once at final destination sends back plates and grey card.
as far as I understood, the car must be deregestered (Sion) -
Then you should be able to register here (Zug) - Even if we de-register in Zug, Canton Zug will not give export plates to non-residents (my father in law)
if the car is trying to be exported, I assume you may carry it abroad, not drive ? Some cantons give export plates to non-residents, some not.
I want to drive the car from Sion to Zug. To save cost I want to get the export plates at first and then no extra charges. Otherwise I can ring Allianz, insure the car for a day and pick it up with own plates I have on current car. But that doesn't solve the problem of export plates for my father in law to fly in and drive to car abroad.
