Aachen or Maastricht?

For a full afternoon/evening in mid-September. Which would you choose?

Dining suggestions appreciated as well. Thanks.

Maastricht is lovely along the river and plenty of building to see. For the a sunny evening I'd suggest stopping for a drink or two along the Maas, cafe Zuid is a nice spot for people watching, there used to an expat bar along the river near the main bridge on the Wyck side but it looks as though it exists no longer.

I'm afraid I can't remember the names of the restaurants there.

One recommendation would be to "climb" the highest point in the Netherlands (I was told it was, not fully sure) and have a look at the Fort Sint. Pieter, great spot for a picnic.

Maastricht of course, great city (from a biased Dutch )

I've been to both, definitely Maastricht!

Never been to Maastricht but Aachen is definitely a nice place to hang out.

It feels like a succesful blend of German perfectionism with understated Belgian nonchalance.

I did some seminars at the Uni there. Some really wonderful people.

I'd go with Maastricht. I know the city quite well, but it was many years ago, as we had a factory nearby, so often went there for lunch and dinners. I can't recall the restaurant names but there are many and I've never eaten badly in any of them.
