What is a Scottish accent, is it possible to spell it out in text or a link? I am watching this Jermey Kyle show right now with some people who are fighting over a paternity test or whatever, and, it's hard enough to understand an accent that's from Manchester, but I have re wound this atleast a dozen times, and I have no idea what they are talking "ah Bowt".
Iain Banks did a great job of spelling the scottish accent phonetically in his book "The Bridge". The chapters for the character of the Barbarian are all first person with the speech spelled out just as you'd hear it.
Can't seem to find any samples online though

I, well no. I was going thru the channels, because they are always getting reset, on my way to CNBC, and this channel is a couple after the Italian channels, and when I came across it, I was like, I think they are talking english.
So, although it appears to be Jenny Jones-ish, I am intrigued by the words, and how they are almost english like. Is it english? The host I understand, so I think it is. But the guests; it's strange.

There are different dialects in scotland, i am a proud speaker of Doric, none of that west coast rubbish for me.

I once saw a film - My Name is Joe. Horribly depressing film about people in GLassgow with drinking problems. It had subtitles. I needed them.
A few months ago, I was flipping through the channels and saw an episode of Jeremy Kyle - people were talking, well, arguing and yelling and screaming about a paternity test. I had to stop for a moment - it was like a train wreck - you know you should pass it, but you have to stop. Wonder if that's a repeat or it's a common subject. THe accents were also hard to understand.
I actually find understanding regional accents in spoken English much more difficult than I did when I heard them regularly.
Many of our class at school had Scottish accents, the local accent was Midland, I had a host of cousins from Yorkshire and my fathers family came from South Africa. I had no problem with any of it. Now, if I don't understand the first couple of words immediately, my brain 'runs it through again' and asks was it German? is it French? is it Italian? is it Greek? and only then might it have another go at the text as English with an unexpected accent. Quite odd and sometimes quite frustrating.
"Och, dinna fash yersel - jis lairn ra banter, ken!" This pre-luded the video, and the video...I am off work early and knocking back a cold one..and I alughed so hard that I am crying right now. AND, didn't understand one word of it. I feel like I am watching an episode straight out of Hee-Haw!
