Advice please,

We have two areas less than 1 foot across of parquet damaged by water. They are not buckled or warped but they have both gone very dark in places and very noticeable. We only just noticed as we had rugs over them. It was done by plants that obviously have leaked even with drip trays.

So do we claim on our 3rd party insurance haftpflicht or just pay up and get it fixed now with a professional or wait until we move out in any years to come (no plan on leaving flat). I would rather the landlord did not find out

Any advice appreciated or names of repair men / companies in Thalwil or Adliswil area.

If you can live with it (under the rug), I'd claim on insurance when you move out.

Take the rug away for a few months, the light will change the pigment colour of the parquet. It could be, if it becomes sufficent sunlight, the dark stain would become much less an eyesore.

Your rugs will make also a shadow on the parquet.

If the parquet is Oak this could take some time.

I wouldn't replace it without telling the landlord as it is very difficult to find the same color. I would leave it like that, if you stay a long time in the flat they may not ask you to replace it.

I would remove the carpet for a while too so the wood colouring may lighten up or else just claim on the insurance.

Thanks for all the feedback. I think we will remove rugs and hope it lightens a little and then hopefully many years down the line the landlord will be understanding and expect a little damage and if not claim on insurance if we need to.

In order to properly repair it, it is possible the entire floor will need sanding.

If you are not planning on moving anytime soon, check that the floors are dry, if not, leave them uncovered until they are. Otherwise I would just leave the carpets on them and deal with the problem when you move.

Your liability insurance should cover this. It is up to the landlord to choose the firm to repair it, but if you want to be sure you are not being taken for a ride, it is worthwhile to get quotes on your own.

If it doesn't lighten up naturally with time, then try gently bleaching - lemon juice could help.
