I'm not sure if such a thing exists, but if it doesn't then it should
Our bin bags come in two sizes, either 17 litres or 35 litres. And the standard bin in our kitchen is just the right size for the big bin bags - just hook them over the side and sorted. What I'd like to do (especially in the coming hotter weather) is switch to the smaller size bags, but they don't hook properly on the bin. Except if I had some kind of adapter (and I've no idea what that would look like) that would let me hang the little bin bag inside the big bin and keep it open.
Has anyone seen such a thing and know what it's called? Or a way to make one's own out of clothes pegs and sellotape perhaps?
Currently, we use 17L bags which are impossible to stretch over the lip of the bin. I took a metal coat hanger, made a hoop out of it and wedged it in place. Now the 17L bag folds over the metal and it is propped up in such a way to be stable.
If you really want, I can take some pictures of this half-assed "solution"
Is your (presumably under sink) bin round or square? Round would be a bit more difficult. For square just fold up a box out of cardboard to occupy the unused part(s) of the bin and use clothespegs on the bin. For round... no idea.
I think that might work in some cases, but our little bags have a _much_ smaller neck than the big ones and there's no chance of stretching enough.
It's rectangular, and I like the idea of a cardboard box thing (or cone thing if it's round), but I don't think clothes pegs are going to hold the weight of the bag on their own.
Yeah, it would be the hooks which would be the tricky bit. Sitting inside wouldn't be an option though, it would be too low and things thrown in to the big bin would fall down the outside of the little one.
I think it needs to be have some kind of funnel, maybe made out of the top bit of a big bin bag. And I like the idea of a coathanger too. But the little bin bag obviously needs to be removeable when it's full, so those fixings can't be too permanent.
I take it there isn't a name for these things then, it isn't something that already exists to buy?
Is it one of those ridiculously overpriced 'systems' that make Swiss Hausfraus all excited?
If so, you can replace the 35l bin with 2 x 16l bins that fit in the same footprint.
For some ridiculous price, of course.
You could then use a bag in each and use the first one for the more smelly stuff and the second for the non-smelly stuff and when the first one is full, you could put a new bag in there and carry on using the second one until that is full and then change that one.
Or something else equally complicated and confusing.
I am not sure of a name for an adapter-thingy, but I did some googling to see if I could find our setup. It came with the flat so I don't know where you could buy it.
The bin works for either 17 or 35L. You hang the 17L on the hooks at appropriate distances, and the 35L you put the top around all the hooks like with your current setup. When using the 17L you do need to be a bit careful when tossing in the bin so things get in the bag, but maybe this helps?
Ours is like the one with the orange bits you see in the picture. The orange parts are on hinges, so you can flip them up to take out bags or down into place where they hold the bag. A gray cover goes on top of the outside to hold the bag in place.
I discovered a rectangular plastic "ring" tucked away in my cupboard some weeks ago. It had something about 17l written on it and I thought it must be for the bin. I couldn't figure out how to use it though. I user 17l bags which are of course too small for the bin and don't stay in place. Any tips on how to use this ring thing? I place it into the bin which means I have two compartments now: one small, one big and what do do with the bin bag. Do I place it into the smaller compartment created by the plastic ring?
This thread made me realize that the space next to my trash bin was not being utilized. I sit my compost container outside on the kitchen windowsill, so just had empty space there next to the trash bin. I looked at the catalog linked by Tom2345, and they make a 17l bin that fits alongside the 35l bin. I thought it'd be a great place for my recyclables, which i've just been putting in a bin in the corner.
But the bin costs 37.- for a bit of plastic, and i'd have to order it.
In a rare moment of inspiration, I realized that a 20l water jug from Landi would fit in there just perfect. CHF 10.50-, they're opaque/white plastic on a shelf near the wine and cider brewing stuff- the kind with a curved handle top and a little grey spout/valve. I removed the valve, cut the top off and fiddled with it a bit, cut out an opening to throw in bottles and cans, and it's done.
Then I saw the space above the shelf thing that's above the trash bin. I took a cardboard box and cut/taped it to fit, and now i've got a space for my paper and cardboard recyclables, too.
Woohoo! tidier kitchen for 10 franks. Thanks everyone
edit: my flat came with a normal hinged door under the sink, and the Müllex bin on a hook to the door so it angles forward when the door is opened. Not sure if the Landi canister would work next to a bin on sliders...YMMV
In all my years here I never thought about creating something for a problem that doesn't exist. 17l bag half over the frame and the rubber band holder holds it perfectly
