We are looking for a house to rent when we move to Zurich in the summer and we have possibly found a property in Adliswil. Does anyone have any comments about the area? Are there expats there? I have 2 young children (3 and 2)...so can anyone recommend nurserys for them?
Adliswil is excellent! It is a very family oriented town with adequate shopping, green, views, and overall a great place. The woods are just around the corner, you can easily get to the lake, and the train ride is only about 20 minutes to Zurich. There are a few nurseries around but you will have to check for specific places. Have fun!
We like Adliswil - and yes, plenty of expats, multi-cultural and families...
How much childcare do you need ? There are several new childcares that have opened up in the last couple of years... but the cost will make your eyes water unless you've already done your research
locationwise yes since you are closer to the city centre, have more flexibility with public transportation and the lake is 2 to 10mins downhill by bike
adliswil is not really near the lake; there is no direct bus there. you'd have to go by car to wollishofen then go to the lake from there (or take the 184 and tram nr 7 which would take u like 25mins)
i've lived at sonnenberg (albis) and letten (bordering wollishofen near the entrance to the autobahn). despite the name, letten was sunnier. but it took longer to the city (with tram 7) than from the centre of adliswil with the s4. btw the S4 has a frequency of every 20mins in non-peak hours which was a little bit frustrating when going back home from the HB.
apart from that you can find a lot in adliswil. eg it has a big centralized migros. it also has the funiculaire up to felsenegg on the mountain for after work walks. if you are of the hiking type, there is a hiking trail.
it really depends where your apartment is. adliswil is not that small. it even has 3 train station of the s4 (search for adliswil on google maps and you'll see the borders)
I'd definitely recommend Adliswil - as well as the connections to the city, there are three food places open every day of the week - a restaurant/bar, a cafeĢ and a kebab shop. There are several other good restaurants (including one up the top of the ridge at Felsenegg!), but having a choice of three open every day is pretty good ... just for those rare occasions we need to eat out or get take-away.
Oh, and I like the mix of people in Adliswil - plenty of younger families, and also some older people to 'ground' the youth. I've seen a few older people remind teenagers of their manners and how to use garbage bins, receiving a respectful (but short) apology most times ...
Adliswil is not for everyone ; it depends on what you are used to and what suits your needs. we lived in Adliswil and did not have a good time at all!
its divided in two and the differences are very big so be careful. if you intend on sending your children to the local schools then i would recommend you have a few meeting with the teachers as the schools vary a lot! we were not so lucky and had a bad time and so did the other expats at this school
Adliswil would be much more appropriate than Enge with kids (IN MY OPINION), and is very close to everything required (I have one 2 year old, and another on the way), living in Adliswil by Sood Oberleimbach railway station. It's 12 minutes or so on the train to HB, and there's other stops on the way that you can get off if you're going shopping or for beers (Selnau). I can get to a bar, or work as quick as many friends in the city, yet have sheep in the field next to me, and more space inside and outside the apartment. There's night trains every hour, and everything I could need (after spending 6 years near Stauffacher). The nursery we use is run by Adliswil Stadt, and it's excellent, and there's lots of other ones. I don't have any "shade" issues, as mentioned in another post, far from it.
