Adliswil or Wädenswil?

My husband and I are relocating this summer and are looking at both Adliswil and Wadenswil. We have a toddler and are hoping to have another child soon. Any thoughts on the two areas?

Adliswil of course! its a great little place, with a perfect balance of the old and the new. its near zurich, has a migro, a coop, and a denner, and nearly 25% of its population is expats, so you don't feel out of place. ppl are generally well educated, polite, and speak some english. lots of couples with little children. i've been living here for the last 8 months and i wouldn't move anywhere else, not even to inside the city

check out www.adliswil.ch for more info.

absolutely Adliswil - the range of activities and all the infrastructure make Adliswil a GREAT place to live

excellent indoor swimming pool

excellent outdoor swimming pool

local farm

river to walk/ride along side and can have little open fire bbqs beside it

forest nearby

lots of parks

football fields

close to Zürich - you can cycle along a path beside the river all the way into Zürich for around 7km

circus school (yes seriously! you see kids on unicycles sometimes )

depends of course what facilities you require....

let me know if you'd like more info

edit: oh and we've been here for 9years now and have bought our kids up here and have bought an appartment - when it came to the crunch we didn't want to move away

NiHao, Welcome to Zurich. where about in China are you from?

Adliswil: A Swiss Re town, thus quite a few expats, inland, somewhat boring, but closer to Zurich, and apartments are slightly cheaper than Wadenswil and easier to find.

Wadenswil: Popular with expats due to it is in close proximity to Zurich International School. next to the lake and is more lively, but comparing with living in China, All swiss towns are cities are quiet. Bear in mind if you live away from the town centre, the buses can be infrequent to the station, but I guess its the same for all towns.

Personally I would prefer Wadenswil over Adliswil, But why not expand your scope to other towns and villages, and also consider some districts have less tax than others, also think about childcare, as kindergarden spaces can be limited in some areas.

Also there is a direct train from Wadenswil to Wiedikon, where you will find the chinese grocery store LianHua next to station. I am sure you will be missing some proper chinese cusine.

Adliswil is alright, but

- a bit too close to the Albis mountain range

- this also results in an early sunset

- away from the lake

BUT it of course is far close to the city than Wädenswil

Thanks for the thoughts and information about the Chinese grocery store. We have been living in Chengdu for 3 years. I have taken a course in Sichuan cooking and will be happy to find ingredients.

My husband and I both enjoy outdoors activities- especially hiking and biking. Are both towns good for the outdoors? Do both have parks for young children? (My husband will be working at the upper school for ZIS in Adliswil.)

Wädi has a nice brewery and low tax.

Two darned good reasons to live there

I don't know Adliswil so I can't compare the two, but just wanted to chime in and say that Wädenswil is a lovely town - very easy access to the city, a friendly town with pretty much of everything one would need - and of course the gorgeous views of the lake. Life on the 'left side' is quite nice. (I'm a bit further down the lake in Ausserschwyz, commonly known as Beyond The Pale. )

Welcome to Switzerland - best of luck to you as you settle in.

(I used to work in Chengdu back in the mid 90s - good times indeed. I have lots of fond memories of the city. )

Adliswil hands down...you are not far from parks, lots of green, swimming, nature...etc...beautiful views...They also have a cable car and when you get to the top you have a stunning view of the lake...they also have a play place for the children...Lots of children in Adliswil with a decent school system...It is surrounded by cities (kantons) that are close to the lake such as Kilchberg, Ruschlikon and Thalwil...You can get to the lake in no time...Biking is a breeze...Ride along the river or to the Animal Park and keep riding on and on...Lots of shopping and the train is frequent to town...Hope this helps

I'd recommend Adliswil too...

There is a new Montessori bilingual pre/primary school opening after July.

http://www.houseofkids.ch/ - it's on the bus line between Adliswil and Wollishofen.

I do a shopping tour in Zurich for 'foods of the world' - look out for it on the forum, or send me a PM when you are in town and we can arrange a date

Swisspea

that Montessori place is essentially across the road from the ZIS in Adliswil

Adliswil has tons of parks, several great krippes and quite a few kids

PM me if you want more info - it really is a great place for kids to grow up

but you can say that about LOTS of places in Switzerland - really is great for outdoors and the kids

Hi - we are also relocating from China to Zurich in the summer.

We are also looking at living in Adliswil. You mention a local farm - can you tell me more about that? Also, do you know if there is hockey for kids or badminton for kids?

It depends on what you like.

I'd talk Wadi before Adliswil because Wadenswil has gorgeous farm land and wide open spaces - also gets lots of sun

Adliswil doesn't get the same amount of sun as Wadenswil and this is a real concern in winter.

Also Wadenswil has a lot more shops than Adliswil.

.....just imho

good luck deciding - either way i think you can't go wrong

Thanks for all the information. We've decided on Wadenswil.

Good choice. We've been here for about 1.5 years and really like it.

Let me know if you have any specific questions once you arrive.

I would stay away from Adliswil....there are far too many Australians living there for my liking ......just joking Jase

i heard all good things about adliswil too, but the apartment i saw there, although excellent was in the middle of nowhere, just besides of the main road... so i decided moving to thalwil instead.
