Hi guys
I want to ask about my chance to getting Phd studentship position at ETHZ/EPFL in ECE-CS without asistantship (self fund) ..
I know you ll say try to contact with profs.. but just I want to learn what s my chance..Can you say to me what is the chance to get a Phd position in that universities without funds? do you know any person doing same way?
I know that I am not a perfect choice for getting fund in that universities but I have I a scolarship which can cover my live expense
I have a bachelor of ECE with double major (3/4 GPA) and I am doing CS master in switzerland now..no paper.. so what do you think about without fund admissions ?
In general Profs will welcome anyone who can do a decent job and that doesnt cost anything! Just contact the prof in the topic in which you want to do research.
what do you mean with " can do a decent job " ...do you think profs want to employ students who havent funds , without money !
I hope to work in a company during my Phd is it possible ?
I dont understand: if you have a scholarship already, why do you worry about getting extra funds?
because I am marry and I need more money
sorry about my boring questions but this is really important for me
Doing a PhD is a full-time job (and even more, since usually you work in the evenings and weekends as well). I can't imagine anyone working in a company and doing PhD from sth different in the same time, and I don't think any professor would agree for that, since if they invest time in a PhD student, they usually want to have a result from it. What is your motivation for getting a degree?
working in a company and doing PhD is very usual in germany... ,I dont understand , if I am not a assistant why I have to spent all my time in the university for my phd ?
I want to finish my Phd but do you think is it impossible to work in the same time ? and why do you think profs dont agree for that ? I will not their empoyee ..
As mentioned before, doing a Phd is like a full-time job. You will get paid (quite well) for it by EPFL or ETHZ.
well ..I know that doing a Phd is like a full-time job..I mean without fund phd..both univerities pages say about self-fund phd is also possible. Is this mean dont work at university ? or work at university but dont take money from uni ?
Well, because you do your research as well... Unless you do it in humanities, but then you have to have time to read all the stuff, but it means hours and hours of work, any place you would spend this time at.
Yes, I do. Profs still need to supervise you and pay attention to your work and you often do sth that is part of their research. Why would they want to supervise a person, who can spend maybe 10h/week on the research? And also, what would you put in your thesis then, if you don't have time to work on it?
I believe it means you have a rich family or vast savings or scholarship from a different country... You work as everyone else at the uni (ok, maybe you don't teach) - you are just not paid.
thank you that is very clear..
To the OP - what field are you in? I guess this may make a difference as to whether one could work in industry while doing a PhD. I know in some fields and countries there are industrial-based PhDs but not sure this is common in CH.
To meet the goals for a PhD, requires at least 3 years full time work. To be awarded the degree by the ETHZ/EPFL you would have to fulfill certain criteria and 3 years full time work would be the minimum requirement. It's a question of how you would manage to meet these criteria while working elsewhere.
Being self-funded means that you pay your own salary and will perhaps also contribute to your research costs through the payment of bench fees.
thank you for all posts .. I understand that it will be very difficult for me maybe I can try my chance in germany ..
