Advise on living in horgen

Hi all. Me and my family have 2 options for moving to the lakeside - horgen or rueschlikon. Rueschlikon is near thalwil and we have seen a few nice public play areas (spielplatz) in thalwil. This is fine. But when we visit horgen, there seems to be less facilities for kids. Am I missing something? The only public play area we stumbled upon is the one by the lake. Any advice to families living in horgen on where they hangout with their young children will be greatly appreciated.

And the public schools in horgen especially the one in town center - Thumbs up?

Thanks in advice for any response. We need to make our decision by next week. Contracts are coming.

My advise would be put good schools at the top of your list. if you can see where you will be living, go and see the schools and ask for a visit. in my own opinion Thalwil/Rushlikon is much better,

i wish i'd done this before we moved !

Also Thalwil has lower taxes but higher property prices. There's a good reason for this!

The taxes wont make a difference if the OP is paying Quellensteuer. I prefer Horgen myself. Its still quiet but has more convenience with trains, access to the autobahn, shopping (3 coops and 1 migros, 1 denner), some good restaurants.

Also there is a large area for kids to play in Waldegg. There is the jungle gym deal, basketball courts, hiking, track, soccer fields, etc. Its really nice

Hi OBone

Thanks for the reply. Schools are definitely important and we will take your advice on this and have a look at the schools. BTW..if you don't mind me asking, where did you moved to?

Cheers

Hi

Thanks for the reply. This is what we have been trying to look for but is it further out from the town center or all near waldegg?

Cheers

I grew up in Horgen but moved to Thalwil for my first apartment. I think both places are nice and very close to each other. There is a direct bus from Horgen to Thalwil that takes 15 minutes and with the train it takes five. Both have it advantages and disadvantages. In my opinion you have to be very careful with Thalwil. Yes the center is nice and the public transport (especially trains) are great. But if you happen to live a little bit outside the center there is nothing! There are hardly any shops and you are in the middle of nowhere. In Horgen there are shopping facilties in every part of the town. Also it is the capital of the region (Bezirkshauptort) which means there is even a school for the aprentisage. Waldegg is at the outskirt of Horgen yes, but there are a lot of busses running there so no problem if you need to go to a big playground. Most schools have a playground that is accesible to public at least as far as I know. Check Tannenbach or Bergli (there are the other big primary schools). There is also one directly in town but Tannenbach and Bergli are more quiet. Also many houses with apartments have their own playgrounds. That's why there are not so many public ones.

So in a nutshell I would say both towns are nice. They are the biggest ones on that lakeside which means good shopping possibilities which long opening hours. So I would just look for direct possiblities i.e. go and see the place where you could be living. Look at the neighbourhood, walk to the nearest school, look for the nearest bus stop, look for the nearest shopping possibilities and then make your decision! Both towns are a good choice, be glad of your possibilities!

Do you mean rental contracts are being prepared? Or employment contracts?

If it is the former, it is going to cost you money if you don't sign either, or even one and not the other.

we're in Adliswil

lookup my other posts and you'll see what i mean

Yes... We have been hit before when we pulled out of one apt.

Ideally Thalwil will be the place but it is not easy even getting the agents to call for a reference. Thanks for the advice. Greatly appreciated.

So why would you want to pay a fee again. If you don't sign the contract once it has been sent to you, not only will you be liable for the fee but if it is an agency you are dealing with, forget about ever being considered for one of their apartments.

It seems backwards to do the area research after viewing the apartment and asking for a rental contract.

All too often I read posts complaining how difficult it is for foreigners to rent an apartment. When you behave this way, tie up two apartments knowing you will only take one and then refuse another, do you think you are making it easier for others?

Well... if you really want to know. One is to buy and the other is to rent. Yes... we got to a point in rental search that we thought.. hey... it might be better to buy. At least you are given better treatment that the agencies who string you on for days or weeks and in the end, don't even bother to call your references. We did our area search before hand but to be honest... you don't really have the leisure of time to do a proper search. Please don't think we are so fortunate. We like many foreigners don't really have a good time searching for right place for us and when we do, we don't get considered.

Thank you irish tempatation. Good to get perspective from a person who has really lived in 2 places.
