Do kids must have an AHV number? I have been asked for such number when filling in a form for a school(private)

AFAIK, you can find it on their insurance card.
It’s printed on the health insurance card.
The usage of the AHV-No by private entities is very limited.

In terms of data privacy I would refuse reporting the AHV number. Can't see any connection. Is it really a mandatory field?
My wife had a contract with an international school. They requested view of my residency permit. (We're both on C). We politely told them to get stuffed.

Their request for the AHV-Nr could be to allow them identify the child's health insurance provider in case of an accident. But some such would be quite a stretch, there's always time to battle administration after the incident if necessary. I'd refuse to provide that, too.
It's kind of the same with providing your birthday or sex to any business. Those data are very rarely necessary for the business itself but they're useful for targeted ads.
It’s how you are uniquely identified and you are going to just have to get used to it because it is required in most personal documents.
Since you probably have to give the details of your child's health insurance provider, the AHV number is on the health card, so they will get it anyways.
Honestly I wouldn't be too worried.The AHV office does everything by post. They called our home this morning and wouldn't give my husband an update even though he is actually the person helping me with all the paperwork and has spoken to them several times. He was told they will write me a letter.

That makes no sense.
The AHV-Nr is a Swisswide unique identifier, statistics however aggregate by certain (shared) attributes.
It's not obvious how they could use it in such an aggregating manner.
